What’s in the MVA permit practice test?

The MVA’s tutorial page sets out what each version is for:

  • Untimed, with links from each topic to the matching part of the Driver’s Manual
  • Timed, to practice finishing within the real time limit

The tutorial page also says parents can use it to check their own knowledge while they help a teen learn.

A study plan for the Maryland permit test

These steps follow the MVA’s knowledge test page, which names the manual, then practice tests, then test day:

  1. Read the Driver’s Manual from the start, all 10 sections.
  2. Learn the signs by color and shape in Section 4 before you learn them one by one.
  3. Take the untimed tutorial. For each question you miss, go back to that part of the manual.
  4. Try our 20 practice questions as a second check, then go back to the manual for any you miss.
  5. Once you pass the untimed tests easily, switch to the timed version.
  6. Check your documents, book your appointment and arrive early.

Do you need driver education before the permit test?

No. The MVA’s learner’s permit steps don’t include a course. You need the permit before you start the behind-the-wheel part of driver education, and the course itself comes before the driving test.
