Dental hygiene practice questions

These 20 dental hygiene practice questions are our own, written for the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination (NBDHE) and spread across its test specifications: 13 on the discipline-based areas and 7 short patient cases. Each has four options and one best answer, with an explanation. The real exam has 350 questions, with three to five options each, so use this set as a quick check of what you know.

Question 1 of 20

Which injection anesthetizes all the mandibular teeth on one side to the midline?

20 practice questions in the style of the exam.

How to use these questions

Questions 1 to 3 cover the scientific basis, 4 to 12 clinical dental hygiene services, from radiographs to sealants and documentation, and 13 is research and community health. Questions 14 to 20 are short patient cases, like the second session of the real exam. The mix follows the specifications that took effect on November 1, 2026.

Aim for 15 right, which is 75%. That’s our own target, not the JCNDE’s. The NBDHE is pass or fail, and 75 is the minimum scale score, not 75% of the questions right. After each answer you can ask the tutor to explain it another way, and anything you miss comes back at the end.

Where can you find more dental hygiene practice questions?

The Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations (JCNDE) posts free NBDHE sample questions and sells an official practice test through Pearson VUE, as full forms or single modules. Board review courses sell larger question banks. Our 20 aren’t from the JCNDE, and nothing here comes from a real exam.
