The NH driver’s manual

Its full title is the New Hampshire Driver’s Manual, and the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) publishes it as a PDF. The NH driver’s manual is written for people learning to drive, and it’s a natural study guide for the written test, because it covers the rules of the road and driving conditions the test asks about.

What’s in the NH driver’s manual?

Its sections, in order:

  • Section 1, Driving in New Hampshire: licensing requirements, practice driving and the tests
  • Section 2, Driver’s License and Non-Driver ID Information: license types, restrictions, renewal and youth operators
  • Section 3, Dangerous Driving: vision, fatigue, distractions, alcohol, drugs and emotions
  • Section 4, Before Driving: seat, mirrors, safety belts, child seats, loads and snow removal
  • Section 5, Basic Driving: steering, right-of-way, speed, signals, passing and night driving
  • Section 6, Rules of the Road: traffic signals, signs and pavement markings
  • Section 7, General Driving and Parking: tolls, turns, roundabouts, school buses and parking
  • Section 8, Driving Safely: visual search and space management
  • Section 9, Accidents and Financial Responsibility: what to do after a crash, and insurance
  • Section 10, Driving Emergencies: braking, swerving, skids and vehicle problems
  • Section 11, Sharing the Road: pedestrians, bicyclists, motorcycles, trucks and emergency vehicles
  • Section 12, Test Your Knowledge: fill-in-the-blank questions on the other sections

The questions in section 12, and their answers

The last section asks you to fill in the blanks on rules from across the manual, from headlight times to roundabouts. It prints no answer key, so look up each answer in the section it comes from.

How the manual says to use it

The manual asks you to study each section alongside training on the road, with a driver education instructor or a licensed, responsible adult who is 25 or older. It also sends you to the state’s motor vehicle laws, chapters 259 to 269 of the Revised Statutes Annotated (RSA), under Title 21.

Other manuals

The Driver’s Manual is for cars. The DMV’s knowledge tests are specific to the license type, so a commercial driver’s license (CDL) and a motorcycle license have their own.
