The New Hampshire driving test (road test)

You take the road test last, once you’ve passed the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) vision and knowledge tests. For the New Hampshire driving test you bring the car, and a Licensing Examiner scores how you drive in traffic.

  • 10 daysWait to retest after a failed road test
  • ExaminerThe only person riding with you on the test
  • 15 to 20 minutesAverage length of the road test

How do you book a road test in NH?

The DMV schedules it once you pass the knowledge test, through its Appointments and Services page. Road test slots vary between driver licensing locations. If one is free, you can take the road test on the same day as the knowledge test; if not, you get an appointment for a different day.

The car and the driver who brings it

The car you test in must be:

  • Fully registered
  • In safe operating condition
  • Inspected, with an up-to-date sticker if it needs one
  • The right class for the license you’re testing for

A properly licensed driver has to drive the car to and from the test site for you, and should stay there until the test is over.

What the examiner scores

The DMV scores you on:

  • Skill in handling the car in traffic
  • Your driving habits
  • How well you know and understand traffic signs and the rules of the road
  • How you handle the physical, mental and emotional stress of driving in traffic
  • Your attitude toward driving and toward personal and public safety

To pass, you show you can drive with good control. The examiner gives clear instructions but can’t coach you, so ask your questions before or after the test, unless you need a direction made clearer.

How do you practice for the New Hampshire driving test?

The DMV’s pages don’t list set maneuvers for the road test. The manual teaches the moves step by step, from three-point and two-point turns to parallel, angle and perpendicular parking, so you can practice them with the adult who supervises you.

If you fail or miss the test

If you fail, you get an appointment for a retest once the waiting period is up. If you don’t show up, or you cancel with less than 24 hours’ notice, you wait at least 30 calendar days instead. Motorcycle road tests have the same waits, and commercial driver’s license (CDL) tests have shorter ones.

After you pass

You leave with a temporary paper license, and the permanent one comes by mail.
