New York · Permit test

How do I get my permit in NY?

You get a learner permit in NY by passing the written test and a vision test, then paying the fee at a DMV office. You must be a New York resident aged 16 or older. Under 18, you can take the written test online at home first and finish at the office later.

What are the steps to get a permit in NY?

  1. Use DMV's pre-screening tool. It tells you which forms and proofs to bring, starting with application form MV-44.
  2. Gather proofs of identity, age and residence, worth at least 6 points (form ID-44 lists them). The proofs you bring decide whether you get a Standard, Enhanced or REAL ID permit.
  3. Take the written test: at a DMV office, online if you're under 18, or at school through OKTA.
  4. At the office, pass the vision test (20/40 in at least one eye, with or without glasses), pay the fee and get your permit.

What are the requirements for the permit test in New York?

  • You live in New York State and are 16 or older
  • If a parent or guardian completes form MV-45 for you, they must come to the office and sign it there

Driving with your permit

You may drive only with a supervising driver who is at least 21 and licensed for the car. They're the only person allowed in the front seat, and you can carry no more than one passenger under 21 unless they're immediate family, or your supervisor is your parent, guardian, driver education teacher or driving instructor.

Some roads are off limits to every permit holder: streets inside New York City parks, Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority bridges and tunnels, the Cross County, Hutchinson River, Saw Mill River and Taconic parkways in Westchester, and DMV road test areas.
