Free OAT practice questions

Here are 20 free OAT practice questions we wrote, spread across the four tests in the order of the Optometry Admission Test (OAT): the Survey of the Natural Sciences, Reading Comprehension, Physics and Quantitative Reasoning. Each has one best answer and a short explanation. The real OAT has 230 items over about five hours, so treat this as a quick check of what you know, not a mock exam.

Question 1 of 20

Where in a eukaryotic cell does the electron transport chain of aerobic respiration operate?

20 practice questions in the style of the test.

How to use these 20 questions

Questions 1 to 9 are the Survey of the Natural Sciences (3 biology, 3 general chemistry, 3 organic chemistry), 10 to 13 are Reading Comprehension on two short passages, 14 to 17 are Physics and 18 to 20 are Quantitative Reasoning. That’s close to how the 230 real items split.

Aim for 15 right, which is 75%. That’s our own target, not the OAT Program’s: the OAT has no passing score, and each test is reported on a scale from 200 to 400. Have scrap paper ready for the math. On the real test, the calculator is on screen in Quantitative Reasoning only.

Where can you find more OAT practice questions?

The OAT Program, which writes the real test, sells an official practice test in six modules through Prometric, and you can buy one module at a time. Its questions aren’t free, and it publishes no released tests. Our 20 don’t come from the OAT Program, so treat them as practice on the content, not a preview of real items.
