Booking a motorcycle permit test or DMV appointment

You book through your own state’s DMV, not a national system. California and Texas both ask you to make an appointment online. In New York, you can reserve a time at many offices. In Florida, you take the Basic RiderCourse first, then visit a driver license or tax collector office.

California

  1. Start the driver’s license application online if you like, then book an office appointment on dmv.ca.gov.
  2. If you’re under 21, finish a California Motorcyclist Safety Program course first and bring the DL 389 certificate.
  3. At the office, pay the fee, pass the vision test, have your photo taken and take the knowledge test.
  4. Arrive well before 4:30 p.m., because tests aren’t given after that.

Texas

  1. Complete a TDLR-approved motorcycle course. The certificate is valid for 24 months.
  2. Book a driver license appointment through the Texas DPS online scheduler.
  3. Bring form DL-14A, your course certificate, REAL ID documents and the fee.

New York

  1. Check your documents with DMV’s pre-screening tool or form ID-44.
  2. Find your office on DMV’s office locations page and make a reservation if it offers them.
  3. Take the 20-question test at the office. If you pass, you get a temporary permit that day.

Florida

Florida doesn’t have a separate motorcycle permit test to book. You need at least a learner’s license to enroll in the Basic RiderCourse. After you pass it, you have 1 year to add the endorsement at a driver license or tax collector office.

Road tests are booked separately

Most states need a road or skills test later, unless a course waives it. In New York you schedule it online through DMV’s road test scheduler. Wait times there are usually 3 to 5 weeks.
