How many questions are on the motorcycle permit test?

It depends on your state, because each DMV writes its own test. New York has 20 multiple-choice questions and you need 14 right. California asks for 80% but doesn’t publish the number of questions. Texas and Florida lean on a required rider course instead.

New York’s sign rule

In New York, 4 of the 20 questions are about road signs, and you need at least 2 of those right. A total of 14 can still fail if you miss 3 of the 4 sign questions. The test comes in 20 languages.

California: two knowledge tests for some riders

California’s motorcycle test is multiple choice, from the California Motorcycle Handbook, and you need 80%. Its handbook says riders under 21 pass both the regular driver’s knowledge test and the motorcycle knowledge test. Testing aids, like the handbook or a phone, aren’t allowed, and tests aren’t given after 4:30 p.m.

Texas and Florida: the course does the work

Texas requires every applicant to finish a course approved by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR). Once you do, DPS can waive the motorcycle knowledge test. Florida requires the Basic RiderCourse before it adds a motorcycle endorsement to your license. Florida’s Motorcycle Only license still needs the regular Class E knowledge test.
