Can you take the motorcycle permit test online?

Usually not. As of October 2026, California and New York describe the motorcycle knowledge test as one you take at a DMV office. Texas waives it once you finish an approved course, and Florida uses the Basic RiderCourse instead. Online study is fine, but the test or course itself happens in person.

State by state

  • California: the knowledge test is taken at a DMV office after you book. DMV’s online learning option doesn’t cover motorcycle license renewals.
  • New York: DMV’s motorcycle permit page describes the test at a DMV office. Its online permit test pages are written for the car permit, so ask DMV before you count on doing it at home.
  • Texas: there’s no knowledge test to take once you’ve finished a TDLR-approved course.
  • Florida: no separate motorcycle test. You need the in-person Basic RiderCourse.

What about online rider courses?

Many Basic RiderCourses start with an online lesson, then move to hands-on riding. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation says its online Basic eCourse on its own isn’t accepted by any state as a license waiver. You still have to finish the riding part.

What you can do online

  • Read your state’s motorcycle manual
  • Take DMV sample tests, like California’s sample motorcycle test
  • Book your DMV appointment
  • Start your application, in states that allow it

Your state may differ

A few states run their own online knowledge tests. If you’re outside the four states here, check your DMV’s motorcycle page. Be careful with sites that promise an “online permit” for a fee, since only your state can issue one.
