When do USMLE results come out?

Usually two to four weeks after your test, on a Wednesday. Each weekly release generally covers people who tested in the four weeks before it, and you get an email from the organization that registered you when your score report is ready. USMLE results can take longer in rare cases, so allow eight weeks before you contact USMLE.

How long do USMLE results take?

A result can be held while USMLE reviews a test-day problem you reported or a question about the validity of a score. For Step 3, only the first testing day’s date appears on your report.

  • Scores for all three Steps are released on Wednesdays.
  • No new scores come out the week after some holidays, including Independence Day, Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day.
  • If eight weeks pass with no email, contact USMLE about the status of your report.
  • USMLE doesn’t give results by phone, email or fax, and it doesn’t speed up scoring for anyone.

Where to find your score report

Students and graduates of U.S. schools get score reports from NBME through MyUSMLE, for Step 3 too since January 26, 2026. If your school is outside the U.S., your reports come from FSMB’s USMLE portal.

Each report stays online for about 365 days from the email telling you it’s ready. After that you can only get your result as an official transcript, which costs a fee.

What the report shows

  • Step 1: pass or fail. A failing report also shows how you did in each content area.
  • Step 2 CK and Step 3: a three-digit score, pass or fail, a standard error, how each content area compares with your overall result, and a chart against recent first-time takers.
  • Score reports are for you only. Anyone else, such as a residency program or a licensing board, needs a transcript.

Score rechecks

You can ask the organization that registered you for a recheck, for a fee, within 90 days of your result being released. Your answers are rescored on a separate system; nobody reviews the questions by hand. USMLE says no recheck has changed a score so far.
