Where can you take each Step?
- Step 1: Prometric centers in the U.S., Canada and other countries. Testing outside the U.S. and Canada adds a $210 region fee.
- Step 2 CK: the same centers, with a $235 region fee outside the U.S. and Canada.
- Step 3: Prometric centers in the U.S. and its territories only, so international graduates travel for it.
How do you find USMLE test centers and book a seat?
Use your scheduling permit to search for a center and book on the Prometric website. Seats are first come, first served, and USMLE can’t guarantee a center, so book as soon as the permit arrives. International graduates change their testing region through FSMB’s USMLE portal, not through Prometric.
Can you take the USMLE online?
No. USMLE gives the Steps only at Prometric test centers, so there’s no at-home or online version. A lot of the process is online, though: you apply, get your permit, book with Prometric, practice with the free sample questions and NBME self-assessments, and get your score report, all on the web.
A practice session at Prometric
If you want to see a center before your real test, you can book a USMLE practice session there for a fee once you have your scheduling permit. NBME says its self-assessments have different content from these practice sessions.
Test day at the center
Arrive at least 30 minutes early. More than 30 minutes late and you won’t be let in, and you’ll pay to reschedule. Staff check your permit and ID, scan you for prohibited items, may scan your photo ID and fingerprint, and check you again after every break. There’s nowhere for family or friends to wait, so arrange to meet them afterward.
