Veterinary license lookup: how to check a vet or vet tech

This page can’t look up anyone’s license. For a veterinary license lookup, you go to the licensing board for that state or province, because each one keeps its own list of licensed professionals. The American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB) doesn’t hold a national list, but it runs a look-up that takes you to the right board.

  • Each boardKeeps its own list of licensees
  • No exam scoresThe look-up doesn’t show them
  • Not every stateRegulates vet techs, so check first

How does a veterinary license lookup work?

  1. Open the AAVSB’s Regulatory Board Look-Up.
  2. Choose Veterinarian or Veterinary Technician, then the state or province.
  3. Use the entry’s license verification contact to check the person with that board.

The entry also gives the board’s main contact, its disciplinary contact, its requirements and its statutes and rules. Each board keeps its own list, so what you can search by, such as a name or license number, may differ.

Checking a vet tech license

It’s the same route, with Veterinary Technician selected. Not every state regulates vet techs, so in some there may be no state license to find, only a voluntary credential. Look for the letters your state uses: licensed (LVT), registered (RVT) or certified (CVT) veterinary technician.

If you find a problem

Boards investigate complaints against veterinarians, veterinary technicians and facilities. The AAVSB sends you to the board directly, because it doesn’t enforce licensure itself.

What this look-up won’t show

It won’t show exam scores. The AAVSB’s Veterinary Application for Uniform Licensure Transfer (VAULT) service sends score reports only to licensing boards and doesn’t release them to individuals.
