VTNE study guides: the official outline and what else to use

The American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB) calls its content outline one of the most important things to read before the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE). So before you buy any VTNE study guides, start there. The AAVSB also posts a list of abbreviations, a list of textbooks and a set of sample questions. It doesn’t publish a study guide book of its own on its VTNE pages.

  • 10Domains in the VTNE outline
  • 150Scored questions they cover
  • 55 task statementsListed under those domains

The VTNE content outline, by domain

The 150 scored questions split like this, and the outline was approved by the AAVSB’s Board of Directors in March 2023:

Animal Care and Nursing3020%
Pharmacy and Pharmacology2013%
Surgical Nursing2013%
Anesthesia2013%

The handbook also lists 50 areas of knowledge, from anatomy to record keeping. A 30-question domain counts for three times a 10-question one.

  • Sample questions: 10 of them, one per domain, with an answer key
  • Common abbreviations: the short forms used on the exam
  • Resources and textbook references: the reading list, with titles such as The Merck Veterinary Manual
  • Species: the AAVSB says the exam covers those in the skills list from the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA)

Do you need to buy VTNE study guides?

The AAVSB doesn’t say you do. It offers the free material above and paid practice tests, and it doesn’t name any study guide as official. Books from other publishers are their own work. Mometrix, for one, sells VTNE Secrets and says plainly that the AAVSB isn’t affiliated with it and doesn’t endorse it. Check any book’s facts against the AAVSB’s handbook, because a publisher’s figures may differ from it.

Looking for a VTNE study guide PDF? The outline, abbreviations, references and sample questions are all PDFs on the AAVSB’s site. The exam questions themselves are confidential, and sharing them breaks the agreement you accept when you apply.
