AAVSB VTNE practice tests, NAVLE Self-Assessments and other prep

Start with what each exam’s owner sells. The AAVSB VTNE practice test comes from the American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB), and you buy it through PSI. For the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination (NAVLE), the International Council for Veterinary Assessment (ICVA) sells Self-Assessments. These two sets of material don’t overlap: the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE) is for veterinary technicians, and the NAVLE is for veterinarians.

What’s in an AAVSB VTNE practice test?

Each one has 75 questions and runs 90 minutes. The real VTNE has 170 questions. You get feedback on your results across the exam’s 10 domain areas, so you can see where to study. The AAVSB says it offers three versions, and PSI’s store lists Forms A to D.

It’s $50 in US dollars for each attempt, and PSI’s store may show the price in Canadian dollars. The AAVSB also offers group pricing on bulk orders. The questions are copyrighted, and the AAVSB says they aren’t to be copied, recorded or memorized for removal.

Free VTNE practice from the AAVSB

The AAVSB lists 10 sample questions as a free resource, one for each domain, with an answer key. It changes them from time to time. They’re there to show the type of question you’ll see.

NAVLE Self-Assessments from ICVA

Each NAVLE Self-Assessment has 200 multiple-choice questions in four blocks of 50, on the same platform as the real exam. You choose between two timing modes:

ModePer sectionTotal
Standard-paced55 minutes220 minutes
Self-paced110 minutes440 minutes

ICVA says standard-paced gives the most useful feedback, in one sitting. The regular format costs $50 and gives a report with a projected NAVLE score range. Expanded Feedback costs $65 and adds a review of the questions you got wrong. Both come in English or French, and you have 30 days to finish once you start. ICVA is clear that a good result doesn’t guarantee a pass.

Free NAVLE samples from ICVA

ICVA calls its tutorial and sample assessments free, and it posts more sample questions on its website:

  • The computer-based tutorial, with 20 sample items, in English and French
  • A further set of sample questions on ICVA’s website
  • Two sample assessments, one in English and one in French, each with 10 items, a software tutorial and an answer key

How to choose

  1. Read your exam’s official outline first, so you know what’s weighted most.
  2. Try the owner’s free samples to get used to the question style and software.
  3. Take an official practice test or Self-Assessment under real timing, and note your weak areas.
  4. Add other companies’ prep only if you need more questions or teaching. They’re private companies, not the exam owners.
