Driving age in Washington

In Washington you can get a learner permit at 15 if you're in an approved driver training course, or at 15 and a half if you're not. The earliest license is an intermediate license at 16. It turns into a regular license on your 18th birthday, and from 18 you can skip driver training altogether.

Ages at a glance

AgeWhat you can get
15Learner permit, if you're enrolled in approved driver training
15 and a halfLearner permit after passing the knowledge test, without driver training. No license until 18
16Intermediate license, after 6 months on a permit, driver training and both tests. Also the minimum age for a motorcycle permit
18Your intermediate license becomes a regular one automatically. First-time applicants can skip training and the permit
18 and 2118 for a commercial learner permit and in-state CDL driving, 21 to drive commercial vehicles across state lines

Why 15 and 15 and a half are different

Driver training is what buys you the earlier start. Enroll in an approved course and you can apply for your permit as early as 15, no more than 10 days before the course starts. Skip the course and you can still practice from 15 and a half, but you have to wait until 18 for the license itself.

A new rule for under-25s

From November 1, 2026, anyone aged 16 to 24 getting a first Washington license must pass a free online work zone and first responder course. It takes about an hour and ends with a short test. If you get your first license on or before October 31, 2026, or you're 25 or older, you don't need it.
