Washington · Permit test

Can you take the Washington permit test online?

No. As of October 2026, the Washington knowledge test is only given in person, at a driver training school, testing location or licensing office. Online drivers ed doesn't count either: DOL says online, self-paced and parent-taught courses aren't approved for a license before 18. Plenty of the other steps are online, though.

What you can do online

  • Get your 12-digit WDL number by pre-applying in a License Express account.
  • Fill in the learner permit application. If you're under 18, a parent or guardian has to be there to give permission online.
  • Renew your learner permit through License Express.
  • Apply for your license once you've passed both tests, if you already have a Washington photo learner permit and don't need a new vision screening.
  • Take the free work zone and first responder course. From November 1, 2026, first-time applicants under 25 must pass it, and it's online only.
  • Try DOL's free practice test, in English or Spanish.

What has to be done in person

  • The knowledge test itself, at a school, testing location or licensing office.
  • The drive test, in a car you bring.
  • Your photo, at a driver licensing office appointment, with proof of identity.
  • Driver training if you're under 18 and want a license before 18. It must be an approved course with classroom and behind-the-wheel teaching.

About DOL's online practice test

DOL's own practice test is short: 5 multiple-choice questions, and you need 4 right to pass it. You see the same five every time, so it's a quick check rather than real practice. The 20 questions on our practice test page go further, and each one points back to the part of the Washington Driver Guide it comes from.
