Steps to a CDL

  1. Book a driver licensing office that offers CDL knowledge testing. Bring your license, Social Security number and proof of US citizenship or lawful permanent residency.
  2. Self-certify the type of driving you'll do and get a DOT physical.
  3. Pass the knowledge tests for your class and endorsements. Hazmat training must be on record before the hazmat test.
  4. Get your CLP, then complete the training required for your CDL type.
  5. Wait at least 14 days after getting your CLP, then call DOL to book and pay for the skills test.
  6. Pass the skills test and book an office visit to get your CDL.

Fees and time limits

  • CDL knowledge test: $35. CLP: $40. Skills test: $175, which covers 2 attempts.
  • Knowledge test scores are valid for 180 days. A CLP lasts 180 days and can be renewed once.
  • On a CLP, a CDL holder with the right endorsements, 2 years in that type of vehicle and 5 years of driving must sit beside you.
  • Tests come in English, Spanish, Russian and Serbo-Croatian. Interpreters aren't allowed.
  • As of October 2026, DOL has stopped all non-domicile CLP and CDL transactions and testing.

Practice and study

DOL has a free 20-question CDL practice test modeled on the real knowledge test, and the Commercial Driver Guide, in English only. Chapter 1 of the guide has a table showing which sections to study for each license and endorsement.
