The motorcycle hazard perception test

Queensland and WA both have a separate version of the test for riders. In Queensland the motorcycle hazard perception test is online, and you must pass it before the Q-Ride RE course or the RE practical riding test. In WA you sit the motorcycle or moped test at a DTMI service centre, and you need a pass before you book your Practical Driving Assessment.

Who has to sit the motorcycle hazard perception test in Queensland?

Every Queensland learner motorcycle licence holder has to pass it before upgrading their licence. You can take it at any stage of your learner licence, which is different from the car test’s 6-month wait.

It’s the same online setup and the same $42.70 fee as the car test. There’s no offline version for regional or remote communities. If you can’t do it online, message TMR or call 13 23 80.

WA’s motorcycle and moped test

WA runs separate tests for cars and for motorcycles or mopeds. For a restricted (RE) motorcycle licence you need to be at least 16 years and 6 months old, and for a moped (RN) licence at least 16. Either way you need 6 months on your learner’s permit first.

There’s no booking at metro service centres, and WA’s HPT page lists a single set of fees for the test. A pass stays valid for 5 years.

Practise the motorcycle hazard perception test

WA’s free sample test for motorcycles and mopeds has 3 situations: riding straight ahead, riding on a country road, and turning right at an intersection. Each tells you if you responded too early or too late. Queensland’s HPT page has a short example video of a motorcycle scenario, and its practice version opens once you enrol.
