How you get a test date
- Apply for citizenship online through ImmiAccount and pay the application fee.
- Wait for Home Affairs to send your appointment letter. It tells you the date, time and place.
- Start studying Parts 1 to 4 of Our Common Bond while you wait, if you haven’t already.
- Go to your appointment with your letter and an original photo ID. Allow up to an hour.
How to reschedule
Your appointment letter explains how to change the time. Follow those steps as soon as you know you can’t make it.
Don’t just stay away. Missing your appointment without sorting it out can lead to your citizenship application being refused.
Bring the right ID
You need an original photo ID, like an Australian driver licence, a passport or an Australian-issued proof of age card. Photocopies, certified copies and photos on your phone aren’t accepted. Turn up without photo ID and your appointment gets moved to a later date.
Not everyone sits the test
Most applicants aged 18 to 59 get a test appointment. If you’re 60 or older, you may have an interview instead. Applicants aged 16 or 17 may be asked some questions at an interview.
After you pass
Once your application is approved, you’ll be invited to a citizenship ceremony. It’s usually within 6 months of approval, and you must go within 12 months. You become a citizen when you make the pledge at the ceremony.
