Canadian citizenship processing time after the test

IRCC doesn’t publish a fixed wait between the test and the oath ceremony, so there’s no single Canadian citizenship processing time after the test. What it does set out is the order of things: your result, sometimes an interview, then a ceremony invitation once you’re approved.

What’s the Canadian citizenship processing time after the test?

There’s no set number for this stretch. IRCC’s processing-times tool shows current figures for the whole citizenship application. IRCC says processing times depend on things like how complete your application is, how easily your information can be checked, how quickly you respond to requests and how much work it has on hand.

To see where you are, use the status tracker. IRCC doesn’t email updates, and its staff can’t tell you more than the tracker shows about your ceremony.

Getting your citizenship test results

Online, you see a score as soon as you submit, but it’s unofficial until an officer reviews it, which can take a few days or a few weeks. There’s no confirmation email and you can’t sign back in, so print the page or email it to yourself before closing it. In person or on Microsoft Teams, you get your official score right away.

Check the “Citizenship test” part of the status tracker: it shows “In progress” until your test is reviewed, then “Completed” after a pass or a fail.

What can come next

  • An interview with an officer, depending on your case
  • A retest, if you haven’t used your 3 chances
  • A hearing, after 3 fails
  • A decision, and once you’re approved, an invitation to a citizenship ceremony

How long after the citizenship test is the oath ceremony?

IRCC gives no fixed time. You’re invited only after your application is approved, and the invitation arrives at least 1 week before the ceremony. Non-routine applications can take longer.

While the “Citizenship ceremony” part of the tracker shows “In progress”, your ceremony is still being scheduled.

Your ceremony invitation

It comes by email, or by phone or mail if IRCC has no email for you. It gives the date, time and format, virtual or in person, and whether the ceremony is mostly in English, mostly in French or bilingual.

To reschedule, reply within 30 days after the ceremony date with your reason. The new invitation is a final one. Miss a ceremony twice without a reason IRCC accepts and your application is abandoned, with an adult’s right of citizenship fee refunded.
