The Canadian citizenship interview

Not everyone has one. After the test, IRCC may invite you to a Canadian citizenship interview with an officer, depending on your case, before inviting you to a ceremony. The officer checks your identity, your documents and that you still meet the requirements.

Who can be invited

Applications picked for IRCC’s quality assurance program also get a detailed review and an interview with an official, to check documents, the forms and the requirements.

  • Adults 18 and older, including people 55 and over who didn’t take the test
  • Children 14 to 17 who don’t have a parent applying at the same time. The child and the person who applied for them both go

What the officer checks

IRCC says an interview won’t necessarily end with a final decision.

IRCC doesn’t publish a list of interview questions, so have your documents and travel dates ready.

  • Your identity
  • That the photocopies you sent match your original documents
  • That you meet the requirements for citizenship
  • How well you communicate in English or French, which the officer notes

What do you bring to a Canadian citizenship interview?

  • The original documents you sent copies of with your application
  • Any passports or travel documents you used in the 5 years before you applied

An interview isn’t a hearing

A hearing is different: it comes only after 3 failed tests.

Rules and fees can change, so check the official site before your test.
