Who can apply
IRCC recommends applying with more than 1,095 days.
- Permanent resident status, with no removal order and no unmet PR conditions
- At least 1,095 days physically in Canada in the 5 years before you sign, including at least 730 days as a permanent resident. Days as a temporary resident or protected person count as half days, up to 365
- Canadian income taxes filed for at least 3 of those 5 years, if you had to file
- If you’re 18 to 54: proof of English or French at CLB or NCLC 4, and a pass on the citizenship test after you apply
- No criminal or security prohibition
Can you apply for citizenship in Canada online?
Yes, and IRCC recommends it. Each adult has their own account, and adults can apply in a group with linked accounts. A parent or legal guardian can add up to 20 children under 18 to one account.
You must apply on paper instead if you count time abroad as a Crown servant, or a Crown servant’s family member, or if you want a representative to fill in and submit the application for you.
After you apply
- IRCC checks the application is complete, then sends your acknowledgement of receipt (AOR) with your application number and UCI.
- If you’re 18 to 54, IRCC invites you to the citizenship test.
- You may be invited to an interview.
- Once approved, you’re invited to a ceremony to take the oath.
You can leave Canada while you wait, but IRCC asks you to stay available in person in Canada for your test, interview and ceremony, and to tell it if you’ll be away for more than two weeks in a row.
