How many questions are on CELPIP, and what’s the passing score?

There’s no passing score on CELPIP. You get a level from 1 to 12 in each skill, and IRCC decides what you need. For most Express Entry skilled workers that’s 7 in every skill. For citizenship it’s 4 in listening and speaking. Listening has 38 questions in six parts. Paragon doesn’t publish the Reading question count on the pages we could check.

Levels IRCC asks for, as of October 2026

What you’re applying forCELPIP level you need
Federal Skilled Worker Program7 in listening, reading, writing and speaking
Canadian Experience Class, TEER 0 or 1 job7 in all four skills
Canadian Experience Class, TEER 2 or 3 job5 in all four skills
Federal Skilled Trades Program5 in speaking and listening, 4 in reading and writing
Citizenship, ages 18 to 544 in listening and speaking

These are minimums. In Express Entry, higher levels earn more points, so it often pays to aim above them. For permanent residence you need CELPIP-General, and your results must be less than 2 years old when you create your profile and when you apply.

Reading, Writing and Speaking

Reading takes 43 to 56 minutes, according to Paragon’s July 2026 guidebook. The questions are multiple choice. We couldn’t confirm the current number of Reading questions on an official page, so check your CELPIP Account or the free sample test.

Writing and Speaking aren’t question counts. You type answers to writing tasks and record spoken answers to speaking prompts. CELPIP-General LS has only the Listening and Speaking parts.

Why there’s no pass mark

CELPIP is a proficiency test. It measures your level, and the people who use your score set their own bar. That’s why a level 6 can be fine for one program and not enough for another. Check the exact requirement for your program before you book.
