CELPIP-General covers Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, and it’s the version IRCC accepts for permanent residence. CELPIP-General LS covers only Listening and Speaking, for citizenship. There’s no pass or fail: you get a level from 1 to 12 for each skill, and IRCC sets the level you need. There’s a free practice test further down.

How it works

One computer test, a level from 1 to 12 for each skill, and no pass or fail

  1. There are two versions. CELPIP-General has all four skills and is the one IRCC accepts for permanent residence, including Express Entry. CELPIP-General LS has only Listening and Speaking and is meant for citizenship.
  2. The whole test is on a computer, and you take it in person at a CELPIP test centre. There’s no at-home version.
  3. Listening has six parts and 38 questions, and takes about 46 to 55 minutes.
  4. Reading takes 43 to 56 minutes, according to Paragon’s July 2026 guidebook. You answer multiple-choice questions about everyday texts.
  5. In Writing you type your answers. In Speaking you answer on screen prompts out loud, and the computer records you.
  6. You get a CELPIP level from 1 to 12 for each skill. There’s no pass mark: IRCC or whoever asked for your score decides the level you need.
  7. Scores appear in your CELPIP Account, usually 2 to 4 business days after the test. You get an email when they’re ready.

Topics

What’s on the test

01

Reading everyday messages

Emails, notes and notices from daily life in Canada. Most questions ask why someone wrote, what they want, or what happens next.

Key points (4)
  • The reason for a message is usually a request or a piece of news, often near the start or the end.
  • Wrong options often reuse words from the message but change their meaning.
  • Words like “if”, “unless” and “instead” set conditions, and questions often test them.
  • CELPIP-General tests Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, all on a computer at a test centre.
02

Using diagrams, tables and schedules

You combine information from a table, chart or schedule with a short message to make a choice.

Key points (4)
  • Cross out options that fail a must-have first, then compare what’s left.
  • Watch small words like “less than”, “at least” and “latest”: they change the answer.
  • With schedules, work backwards from the time someone needs to arrive.
  • Paragon’s July 2026 guidebook gives the Reading component 43 to 56 minutes.
03

Reading for information

Longer factual texts, like articles and job ads. You find specific facts and check statements against the text.

Key points (4)
  • Answer from the text only, not from what you already know.
  • Quantity words matter: “some cities” is not “every city”.
  • When a question names people, test each one against every rule in the text.
  • Your results appear in your CELPIP Account, usually 2 to 4 business days after the test.
04

Understanding opinions

Letters, comments and short discussions where people argue for something or change their mind.

Key points (4)
  • What comes after “but” or “still” is usually the writer’s real point.
  • A writer can agree with part of an idea and still criticize it.
  • If a question asks how someone feels now, use their final view, not their first reaction.
  • CELPIP results are reported as levels from 1 to 12 for each skill.
05

Vocabulary in context

Everyday words from bills, notices and workplace messages, worked out from the sentence around them.

Key points (4)
  • Look for clue words like “but”, “since” and “until” before guessing a meaning.
  • “Waive” a fee means not charge it; “postpone” means move to a later time.
  • Read the whole sentence before choosing a word to fill a gap.
  • For Express Entry, a CELPIP-General level equals the same CLB level, so CELPIP 7 is CLB 7.

Try 20 CELPIP-style reading and vocabulary questions

These are 20 reading and vocabulary questions in CELPIP styles: everyday messages, a table or schedule, information texts and opinion pieces, with each text included in the question. They’re our own questions, not official CELPIP items. CELPIP has no pass mark, so we use 70% as a practice target: 14 right hits it. That’s a goal for practice, not a prediction of your level. After each answer you can ask the tutor to explain it another way, and anything you miss comes back at the end.

Question 1 of 20

Hi Dan, Thanks again for lending me your ladder last weekend. I meant to bring it back on Sunday, but the eavestrough repair took longer than I thought, and the roofer can’t come until Thursday. Would it be all right if I kept it until Friday? If you need it before then, just text me and I’ll drop it off that evening. Priya Why is Priya writing to Dan?

  3. Try the free official sample test on celpip.ca so the screens and timing aren’t a surprise.
  4. Book ahead. There’s no walk-in registration, so you can’t just turn up on the day.
  5. If you might need to change your date, do it in your CELPIP Account at least 7 days before the test.
  6. Read the test day information on celpip.ca and plan to arrive early.

FAQ

Common questions

What is the passing score for CELPIP for PR?

There isn’t one. CELPIP gives you a level from 1 to 12 in each skill, and IRCC sets the minimum for each immigration program. For the Federal Skilled Worker Program you need CLB 7 in all four skills, which is CELPIP 7 in each. The Canadian Experience Class needs CLB 7 for TEER 0 or 1 jobs and CLB 5 for TEER 2 or 3 jobs. The Federal Skilled Trades Program needs CLB 5 in speaking and listening and CLB 4 in reading and writing. Higher levels earn more points.

What CELPIP score do I need for citizenship?

If you’re 18 to 54, you need 4 or higher in listening and speaking. Reading and writing don’t count. Paragon offers CELPIP-General LS for this: it tests only listening and speaking, and it costs less. IRCC says you can send your results even if they’re expired, as long as the scores are high enough.

How much does the CELPIP test cost in Canada?

As of October 2026, celpip.ca lists CAD 299 plus tax for CELPIP-General and CAD 199 plus tax for CELPIP-General LS at Canadian test centres. Paragon has raised prices before, and the amount for your date is shown when you book, so check it at checkout.

How do I book the CELPIP test?

Create a CELPIP Account on celpip.ca, pick the version you need, then choose a test centre and date and pay online. There’s no walk-in registration. You can move your date in your account up to 7 days before the test.

Can I take CELPIP online at home?

No. CELPIP is fully on a computer, but you must take it in person at a CELPIP test centre. What you can do online is register, practise with the free official sample test and get your scores.

How do CELPIP levels compare to CLB?

For Express Entry, they line up one to one: CELPIP 7 is CLB 7, CELPIP 9 is CLB 9, and CELPIP 10 or higher counts as CLB 10 and above. That makes CELPIP the simplest test to convert. You don’t need a calculator.

To ask if she can keep the ladder a few more days Priya explains why the ladder isn’t back yet and asks, “Would it be all right if I kept it until Friday?” That question is the reason for the message. Everything else is background.

  2. Dear Ms. Tremblay, I’m writing about the parking spot assigned to Unit 604. For the past three weeks, a grey van has been parked there most evenings. I’ve left two notes on the windshield, but nothing has changed. I don’t want the van towed if it belongs to a visitor who simply made a mistake, but I do need the spot, since overnight street parking isn’t allowed in winter. Could you check whether the van is registered to someone in the building? Regards, Marco Silva, Unit 604 What does Marco want the building manager to do first?

Find out if the van belongs to someone in the building Marco’s request is in his last sentence: “Could you check whether the van is registered to someone in the building?” He says plainly that he doesn’t want the van towed yet.

  3. Hello members, Starting Monday, March 3, the pool will close at 8 p.m. instead of 9 p.m. on weekdays while we replace the change room lockers. Weekend hours won’t change. The work should take about six weeks. Lane swim passes bought before March 3 will be extended by two weeks at no cost. We’re sorry for the inconvenience. Riverside Community Centre What will happen to lane swim passes bought before March 3?

They’ll be valid for two extra weeks. The notice says these passes “will be extended by two weeks at no cost.” Extended means they last longer, so they’re valid for two more weeks.

  4. Hi Jenna, Thanks for applying for the part-time cashier position. We’d like to meet you. Interviews are on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons this week, so please reply with a time that works for you. Bring the names of two references. If neither day works, let me know and we can set up a short phone call instead. Tom Store Manager, Northside Hardware According to the email, what can Jenna do if she can’t come on Tuesday or Wednesday?

Have a short phone call with Tom Tom writes, “If neither day works, let me know and we can set up a short phone call instead.” That’s the only option he gives.

  5. Internet plans Basic: $45 a month, 75 Mbps, no contract Plus: $60 a month, 300 Mbps, 1-year contract Max: $85 a month, 1 Gbps, 2-year contract New customers get the first month free on any plan with a contract. Leah wants the cheapest plan with a download speed of at least 200 Mbps. She doesn’t mind signing a contract. Which plan suits Leah best?

Plus Basic is too slow at 75 Mbps. Plus and Max are both fast enough, and Plus is cheaper at $60 a month. Leah is fine with a contract, so Plus works.

  6. Route 12, weekday departures from Main Street Station: 6:40, 7:10, 7:35, 8:05, 8:50 The trip to Hillcrest College takes 25 minutes. Samir’s first class starts at 8:30. He wants to arrive at least 10 minutes early. What is the latest bus Samir can take?

7:35 Samir needs to arrive by 8:20. The 7:35 bus gets there at 8:00, which works. The 8:05 bus arrives at 8:30, the exact time class starts, so it’s too late for him.

  7. City of Westbrook collection guide Blue bin: paper, cardboard, clean cans and plastic containers. Collected every week. Green bin: food scraps and soiled paper towels. Collected every week. Garbage: anything that doesn’t go in either bin. Collected every second week. Large items, like furniture and appliances: book a free pickup online, up to 4 items a year. Ana has an old sofa she wants to get rid of. What should Ana do?

Book a pickup online A sofa is furniture, and the guide says large items like furniture need a free pickup booked online.

  8. Fitness classes Yoga: Monday and Wednesday, 6:00 p.m., drop-in $12 Spin: Tuesday and Thursday, 7:00 a.m., drop-in $15 Aqua fit: Saturday, 10:00 a.m., drop-in $10 Members pay half the drop-in fee. Kofi is a member. He wants a class that costs him less than $6. Which class should Kofi choose?

Aqua fit on Saturday Members pay half, so Kofi pays $6 for yoga, $7.50 for spin and $5 for aqua fit. Only aqua fit is less than $6.

  9. Backyard beekeeping has grown more popular in many Canadian cities. Most cities that allow it set rules. Hives usually have to be kept a certain distance from property lines, and some cities ask owners to register their hives each year. Experts say new beekeepers often underestimate the work. A healthy hive needs checking every week or two in summer, and colonies must be prepared carefully to survive the winter. Many beginners lose their first colony in the cold months. According to the passage, which statement is true?

Many beginners lose a colony during the winter. The last sentence says, “Many beginners lose their first colony in the cold months.” The cold months are the winter, so this matches.

  10. Several public libraries now run seed libraries. Members borrow vegetable and flower seeds for free, grow them at home, and are asked, but not required, to bring back some seeds from their own plants at the end of the season. Librarians say the program has another benefit: it brings in people who rarely visit the library to borrow books. What are members asked to do?

Bring back seeds from the plants they grow The passage says members “are asked, but not required, to bring back some seeds from their own plants.” That’s the request.

  11. Winter tires aren’t just for deep snow. Their rubber stays softer in the cold, which helps them grip the road once temperatures drop below about 7°C, even on dry pavement. All-season tires harden in the cold and lose some of their grip. In Quebec, winter tires are required by law from December 1 to March 15. Other provinces have their own rules, and some only require winter tires on certain highways. Why does the writer mention 7°C?

It’s about when winter tires start to grip better than all-season tires. The text says winter tires help you grip the road “once temperatures drop below about 7°C”, while all-season tires harden in the cold. So 7°C is roughly where winter tires start to do better.

  12. The town is hiring summer students to help run its day camps. Applicants must be at least 16 by June 1 and available for all eight weeks of the program. A first aid certificate is an asset but isn’t required, since the town trains everyone it hires. Please list any experience working with children, such as babysitting or coaching, on your application. Which applicant meets all the requirements?

Raj, 17, who is free all summer but has no first aid training The two must-haves are being 16 by June 1 and being free for all eight weeks. Raj is 17 and free all summer. First aid is only an asset, and the town trains new staff.

  13. The city plans to turn two lanes of Queen Street into bike lanes. Supporters say this will make cycling safer, and I agree that’s a worthy goal. But the plan was announced without asking the shop owners who depend on street parking. A short trial, with a survey of local businesses, would have cost little and avoided much of the anger we’re now seeing. What is the writer’s main criticism?

Business owners weren’t consulted. The writer agrees safer cycling is a worthy goal. The complaint comes after “But”: the plan was announced “without asking the shop owners.” So the problem is the lack of consultation.

  14. Some parents worry that video games are a waste of time. Dr. Okafor disagrees, at least in part. She points to studies showing that some games can improve problem-solving. Still, she says, the benefits disappear when gaming replaces sleep or exercise, and she advises families to set clear limits rather than ban games outright. What does Dr. Okafor recommend?

Setting clear limits on game time She “advises families to set clear limits rather than ban games outright.” That’s her recommendation.

  15. Working from home saved me two hours of commuting a day, and I honestly get more done. But I’ve noticed I barely know the newer people on my team. My company now asks us to come into the office on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I grumbled at first, but I think it’s a fair balance. How does the writer feel about the office days now?

That they’re a reasonable compromise The writer says, “I grumbled at first, but I think it’s a fair balance.” A fair balance is a reasonable compromise.

  16. Karen: The town should build a new arena. Our kids drive an hour to play hockey, and an arena would bring in visitors and money. Paul: An arena would be great, but the old one closed because nobody could afford to run it. Before we build, we need a plan for the yearly costs, not just the construction. What is Paul’s main concern?

There’s no plan for paying to run the arena each year. Paul says the old arena closed because nobody could afford to run it, and that the town needs “a plan for the yearly costs.” His worry is running costs, not the idea itself.

  17. “The landlord agreed to waive the late fee, since the rent was only one day late.” What does “waive” mean in this sentence?

Not charge it To waive a fee means to choose not to charge it. The landlord is being generous because the rent was only a day late.

  18. “Because of the storm, the meeting has been postponed until next Thursday.” What does “postponed” mean in this sentence?

Moved to a later time To postpone something is to move it to a later time. The words “until next Thursday” confirm that it will still happen, just later.

  19. “Concert tickets are non-refundable, but they are transferable.” What does “transferable” mean here?

You can give them to someone else to use. Something transferable can be passed to another person. The tickets can’t be refunded, but if you can’t go, a friend can use your ticket.

  20. Hi Sam, I know you were hoping to move the meeting, but I’m afraid the date is ______. The board has already booked the room and sent out the invitations. Lin Which word best completes the message?

fixed Lin is saying the date can’t change, because the room is booked and invitations are out. “Fixed” means set and not able to change.
