What you need before you’re licensed
You must complete every licensing requirement within your licensing term, the three-year period that begins on May 1 of the year you choose in your application. The requirements include:
- Passing the barrister exam and the solicitor exam
- Experiential training, through the articling program or the Law Practice Program (LPP)
- The Good Character Questionnaire and its documents, part of your application
In the 2026/2027 fee schedule, the articling program or the LPP costs $2,800, and a request for an exemption from or abridgement of experiential training costs $160.
How does the Call to the Bar in Ontario work?
If you meet all requirements, licensing instructions come about 10 business days after your result. Candidates eligible for a June Call to the Bar usually receive specific licensing information in March.
The instructions take you through three steps:
- Choose administrative licensure or a ceremonial Call to the Bar.
- Pay the licensing fee.
- Complete the oath, if it applies to you.
Ceremonial call or administrative licensure
The 2026/2027 fee schedule lists both options:
| Option | Fee | Attend |
|---|---|---|
| Ceremonial Call to the Bar | $250 | Required |
| Administrative licensure | $165 | Not required |
All fees are subject to applicable taxes and may change.
