Ontario bar exam results, rewrites and appeals

The Law Society of Ontario (LSO) posts Ontario bar exam results in LSO Connects, with a message that tells you how to view yours. A pass is valid for your entire licensing term. After a fail you get an exam profile, and you can register to rewrite or ask for an appeal within a short window.

When do Ontario bar exam results come out?

The LSO’s exam guide says results come within six to eight weeks after each sitting, and its dates page says they’re usually available about eight weeks after it. If you pass, the steps to your licence are on the Call to the Bar page.

If you fail

You get a fail result in LSO Connects and, about five business days later, an exam profile. It shows how you did in each competency category and, for lawyer candidates, each area of law.

After a first or second fail:

  • Register to rewrite in LSO Connects and pay by the exam registration deadline.
  • Ask for the LSO’s free tutoring before you rewrite in the same licensing term. The request is due by the exam registration deadline.
  • Whether a rewrite needs another set of study materials depends on its licensing year.

How many attempts you get

You may write each exam up to three times in your licensing term. If you first write in the winter and fail, your following chance is the summer sitting, which falls in the following licensing year.

After a third fail, you may ask for a fourth attempt if extraordinary circumstances affected your ability to pass: circumstances outside your control that you couldn’t reasonably foresee, such as serious medical or psychological conditions or an unexpected family emergency. The request is due within 60 days of the result, on the required form.

You’re removed from the licensing process if you don’t apply within those 60 days, if the request is denied, or if you fail an exam four times.

Appealing a fail

You may request an appeal within 10 business days of the later of the date results come out or the date your exam profile appears in LSO Connects. Send it as a message with the subject “Exam Appeal Request” and a clear explanation.

Appeals deal with possible procedural or technical errors and may include manual remarking. You can’t see your exam booklet or answer sheet, get your score or learn the passing mark. Appeals are generally completed within 30 business days, and the decision is final.

You can register for a later sitting while you wait, but deadlines aren’t extended. If the appeal ends in a pass, the LSO refunds the fee for that later exam and no other fees.
