CPCS red card: the Trained Operator Card

The CPCS red card, or Trained Operator Card, is what you get from the Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS) after passing the Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) test and the technical tests, if you don’t yet hold the vocational qualification (VQ) for that plant. Each category on it lasts two years from the day you passed the practical test. The red card can’t be renewed: it’s there to give you time to get the VQ and move up to a blue card.

  • 12 monthsExtension while you work on the VQ
  • No expiry dateThe card itself, unlike its categories

What does a CPCS red card mean on site?

It shows you passed an HS&E test, the CPCS theory test and the CPCS practical test for the category. NOCN Group’s Scheme Booklet for Operators says a newly trained operator still needs full and close supervision until they’re experienced enough to work alone, and the employer should assess and mentor them in that time.

Holding a category doesn’t mean you can run every machine in it. You still need familiarisation training on each type you’re asked to operate.

How long a red card lasts

Each category runs for two years from its practical test pass; the card itself has no expiry date. When a category runs out, you have a 12-month grace period to upgrade it to a blue card. There’s no red card renewal: if you can’t get the VQ in time, you extend the card or retake the tests.

Extending a CPCS red card

NOCN lists two routes, depending on how long ago the category ran out, and an appeal for exceptional cases:

  • 12-month VQ extension: your card is in date or ran out less than 12 months ago, and you’re registered for a relevant VQ. You get a card for another 12 months.
  • Additional Trained Operator Card: your card ran out more than 12 months ago, so you’ve left the scheme. Pass the HS&E test, the CPCS theory test and the practical test again, and the centre requests a new two-year red card.
  • Appeal: if exceptional circumstances stopped you upgrading, email cpcs@nocn.org.uk with your reasons and details.

For the extension, email proof of registration from the awarding body (not a payment receipt) to cpcs@nocn.org.uk with your card number, name, date of birth, postal address and an email for the payment link.

Adding categories and endorsements

  • A new category: pass the HS&E test, then the CPCS theory test within two years of it, then the practical within six months of the theory.
  • A new endorsement on a category you hold: pass the HS&E test and the practical test. You don’t need the theory test again, however old your card is.

The centre requests the updated card for you after the practical test.
