How to book your IELTS test in the UK

In the UK you book IELTS with the British Council or IDP, at an official test centre. Find a centre and date on the IELTS website, pick the right test version, and pay online. If it’s for a UK visa, book IELTS for UKVI or Life Skills at an approved UKVI centre, not a standard test.

How to book

  1. Check which test you need, and the band scores, with your university, employer or visa authority.
  2. Choose the version: IELTS Academic, General Training, IELTS for UKVI (Academic or General Training) or IELTS Life Skills.
  3. Find a centre and date on the IELTS test centre finder. It lists British Council and IDP centres.
  4. Book and pay online, using the ID you’ll bring on the day.
  5. Look out for your confirmation. It gives your times, venue and Speaking test slot.

Booking for a UK visa

UKVI only accepts tests taken in person at an official IELTS for UKVI centre. GOV.UK says to check the provider’s website for dates and centres, not to contact centres directly. UKVI approved IELTS to carry on as a Secure English Language Test in March 2026.

IELTS for UKVI has the same content and scoring as standard IELTS. The difference is the extra security on the day, and the Test Report Form.

Your Speaking test may be on another day

Listening, Reading and Writing are in one session. Your Speaking test may be on the same day, or up to about a week before or after, depending on the centre. Check the time on your confirmation.

Changing or cancelling

You can move your test once, to a date within three months of the original. Close to test day, a transfer may be treated as a cancellation. Refunds depend on when you cancel. IELTS for UKVI has its own terms.
