How much does IELTS cost in the UK?

There’s no single UK price. Each test centre sets its own fee. In October 2026, the London centres we checked on the official IELTS centre finder listed IELTS Academic or General Training at £240 to £260. IELTS for UKVI and Life Skills are priced separately. Check the price for your centre and date when you book.

Other costs

  • One Skill Retake: the price varies, so ask your test centre.
  • Enquiry on Results (a re-mark): you pay a fee, and you get it all back if your band score changes.
  • Moving your test date: you can transfer once, to a date within three months. A late change may count as a cancellation.
  • Cancelling: any refund depends on how early you cancel and on your centre’s rules. IELTS for UKVI has its own terms.

Which test are you paying for?

Make sure you book the right version before you pay. If you need IELTS for a UK visa, a standard IELTS test usually won’t do. You need IELTS for UKVI or IELTS Life Skills, taken at an approved UKVI centre. Degree-level Student visas are the main exception: they accept standard IELTS or IELTS for UKVI.

Preparing can cost nothing

The official sample questions on ielts.org are free, with answer keys. The free IELTS Trial Test, at participating centres, gives you timed practice marked by an IELTS examiner. Books, courses and apps are optional.
