IELTS One Skill Retake: resit just one section

If one section let you down, you may not need to sit the whole test again. IELTS One Skill Retake lets you resit Listening, Reading, Writing or Speaking on its own, within 60 days. Your full test must have been IELTS on computer at a centre that offers it. You can also just book a whole new test whenever you’re ready.

Who can take it

  • You took a full IELTS on computer test at a centre that offers One Skill Retake.
  • You sit the retake within 60 days of that test.
  • You haven’t already used a retake for that test. It’s one retake per full test.
  • It covers IELTS Academic and General Training. It isn’t available for IELTS Online.

What happens

The retake has the same format and timing as that section in the full test. Results come in 3 to 5 days.

You get a new Test Report Form with your new score and the other three scores from your original test. You choose which form to use. If you took Writing on Paper first time, you retake Writing the same way.

Will it count for a UK visa?

UKVI accepts One Skill Retake for IELTS Academic and General Training on computer, in selected locations. Universities and other organisations decide for themselves. Check with them before you book.

Price and booking

The price varies by centre, so ask yours. Make sure your centre offers it before you book your full test, so the option is there if you need it.

Or take the whole test again

There’s no waiting period: you can book a new test as soon as you feel ready. IELTS says your score is unlikely to improve without extra work on your English. If you think a section was marked wrongly, you can ask for an Enquiry on Results instead.
