SQE courses and other ways to prepare

You don’t have to take a course to sit the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE). The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) no longer prescribes any training, and the only rule is that you pass SQE1 before SQE2. SQE courses range from self-study packages to a full master’s degree. The SRA’s free sample questions and course finder come first in the comparison, then courses with the prices on the providers’ own sites in October 2026.

What kinds of SQE courses are there?

The SRA’s training options page sets out some ways to prepare. It calls them examples only, and says it expects new routes too.

  • A law degree that teaches everything SQE1 assesses, so no extra SQE1 training is needed.
  • A law degree, then a focused SQE1 course. These courses carry no academic award and don’t qualify for student loans.
  • A non-law degree, then a longer SQE1 course for non-law graduates, or a master’s degree that includes SQE training.
  • Self-learning with study materials, which the SRA calls a low-cost option that you can combine with work.
  • For SQE2: qualifying work experience topped up with training or mock assessments, a focused SQE2 course, or a master’s that covers SQE2.

SQE self-study and revision

Self-study is allowed for both parts. The SRA’s warning is that you need to be self-motivated and able to learn without outside support or feedback. It points out that some study materials include practice questions, so you can check your own learning as you go.

For revision, start with the SRA’s own material: 220 SQE1 sample questions and 10 SQE2 sample questions with written answers, plus the assessment specifications that list what each part covers.

Using the SRA’s SQE training and course finder

The SRA’s course finder lists over 150 providers and more than 250 training options. You can filter by SQE1, SQE2 or both, by delivery (face-to-face, live online, pre-recorded, hybrid, one-to-one tutoring or materials only) and by price band, then compare providers side by side.

The organisations supply their own details, and the SRA says it doesn’t verify them. It also hasn’t published pass rates by training provider: in December 2025 it said it didn’t yet have confidence in the data it had collected.

What to check before you pay for an SQE course

  • Whether an SQE1 course covers every SQE1 topic, or leaves gaps you’d have to fill.
  • Which practical skills an SQE2 course covers, and in which legal contexts.
  • Whether the price includes the SQE assessment fees. The University of Law, BPP and QLTS School all say theirs don’t.
  • Whether the course comes with an academic award. Only a master’s can be paid for with a postgraduate loan.
  • Whether it offers qualifying work experience, for example in a university law clinic.

The SRA says you’re responsible for checking the quality and suitability of any training before you choose it.
