Question 1 of 20
Read the passage, then decide whether the statement is true, false or you can’t tell from the passage alone. Harwick’s public library opened in 1872. It was paid for by a local mill owner, Thomas Reade, who insisted that admission be free. For its first twenty years it opened only in the evenings, so that mill workers could visit after their shifts. In 1894 the library moved to a larger building on Bridge Street, and daytime opening began the following year. Membership rose from about 300 in 1880 to over 2,000 by 1900, although records from the 1880s are incomplete. The original building later became a school and was demolished in 1961. Statement: The library was open during the day from 1895.
