Where to get it
MVD links the manual from its new-to-Arizona and foreign-applicant pages, under “Download the Driver License Manual”. The teen guide is the place to start if you’re under 18.
What to focus on
The test checks Arizona traffic law. These are the rules from the state’s statutes that new drivers most often need to know.
- Permit rules: a licensed driver 21 or older beside you, and no phone while driving except in an emergency
- Default speed limits: 15 mph at school crossings, 25 in residential and business districts, 65 elsewhere
- Right-of-way: yield to the car on your right at uncontrolled intersections, and to oncoming traffic when turning left
- Signal at least 100 feet before a turn, and dim high beams within 500 feet of oncoming cars
- Parking: 15 feet from a hydrant, 20 from a crosswalk at an intersection, 30 before a stop sign, 50 from a railroad crossing
- Stop for a school bus with its stop arm out, leave 3 feet when passing a bike, and stop 15 to 50 feet from an active railroad crossing
- Alcohol: 0.08 for drivers 21 and over, zero under 21, and 12 months’ suspension for refusing a test
Riding a motorcycle too?
There’s a separate Motorcycle Operator Manual and a separate motorcycle knowledge test. If you’ve never held an Arizona permit or license, MVD says you take both the motorcycle test and the driver license knowledge test.
Want the law itself?
Arizona’s traffic rules are in Title 28 of the Arizona Revised Statutes, free on the Legislature’s website. Our 20 practice questions are written from these sections, and each one names the section it comes from.
