What to bring to get your Arizona instruction permit

Your permit checklist

• One proof of identity: an original or certified birth certificate, or an unexpired U.S. passport or passport card
• Your complete Social Security number. MVD doesn’t need the card
• Not a U.S. citizen? A document showing your presence is authorized under federal law, such as a green card or an Employment Authorization Card
• Proof of a name change if your name differs from your identity document
• Under 18: your parent or guardian, or an application they signed in front of a notary
• The $7 permit fee, and your glasses or contacts for the vision test

Who has to sign for a teen

If you’re under 18, your application must be signed by the right adult. MVD’s rules depend on custody.

• One parent, if your parents are married to each other
• Both parents, if they aren’t married to each other but share joint custody
• The parent with sole custody
• If neither parent has custody: a legal guardian or a foster parent you live with (proof required), or an employer (death certificates must be shown)

Travel ID or non-travel?

You can get a regular permit or license, or a Travel ID, which is Arizona’s REAL ID. Since May 7, 2025, you need a REAL ID-compliant card, a passport or another approved ID to fly within the U.S.

For a Travel ID you also need two documents from different sources showing your name and current Arizona address, such as a utility bill, bank statement, insurance policy or government letter. As of October 2026, a Travel ID costs $25.

Getting a new Arizona ID card instead

Not driving yet? An Arizona ID card is open to any age, even babies. You need the same identity proof, your Social Security number and two proofs of Arizona address. As of October 2026 it costs $12, and it’s free if you’re 65 or older.
