How many questions are on the Arizona permit test?

Arizona MVD doesn’t publish it. As of October 2026, MVD’s website doesn’t give the number of questions or the pass mark for the permit test. You’ll often see 30 questions and 80% on practice sites, but we couldn’t confirm either number on an official MVD page, so treat them as unofficial.

What MVD does say about the test

MVD calls it the non-commercial knowledge test. Its teen guide says you can pass it in an office or by taking the Permit Test @ Home. MVD’s motorcycle page adds that the driver license knowledge test is based on the Driver License Manual.

Passing it is one step, not the whole visit. You also pass a vision test and have your photo taken in an office before the permit is issued.

How our practice test is scored

Our practice test has 20 questions. Since MVD doesn’t publish a pass mark for the permit test, we use 80%, the bar MVD states for its commercial knowledge tests. So 16 right out of 20 counts as a pass.

If you can score 80% or better on several different practice sets, you’re in good shape, whatever the real test’s exact length.

What the questions cover

The test checks that you know Arizona’s traffic laws. These are the areas worth knowing cold.

  • Permit and Class G rules: who must sit beside you, how long you hold the permit, teen limits
  • Speed: 15 mph at school crossings, 25 in residential and business districts, 65 elsewhere unless posted
  • Right-of-way at intersections, left turns, freeway ramps and crosswalks
  • Signals, headlights and parking distances
  • School buses, emergency vehicles, cyclists and railroad crossings
  • Alcohol: 0.08 for adults, zero for drivers under 21, and the penalty for refusing a test

Languages and test formats

MVD lists its written tests in 11 languages: English, Arabic, French, German, Italian, Korean, Mandarin, Russian, Spanish, Tagalog and Vietnamese. It says automated, printed and audio versions are available, which helps if reading in English is hard for you.

If you don’t pass

MVD’s teen guide doesn’t spell out a retake rule for the permit test. On its motorcycle license page, MVD says one application fee covers unlimited attempts at its written tests, including the driver license knowledge test, and that you can test again the next day. If you’re unsure, ask at the office.
