How it fits together
- Pass the knowledge test, at home with Permit Test @ Home or at an office.
- Go to an MVD office with the originals of your documents.
- If you’re under 18, your parent or guardian signs your application there, or you bring a notarized one.
- Pass the vision test and have your photo taken. Your permit is issued, and your six months begin.
What we couldn’t confirm
MVD’s pages we checked don’t explain who can sign up for Permit Test @ Home, what it costs or how many tries you get. Practice sites say it’s for under-18s through a parent’s AZ MVD Now account, but that isn’t on an official page we could read. Start at AZMVDNow.gov, or ask MVD.
Moving from another state with a permit?
MVD gives you credit for the time you’ve already held it. Its example: with a California permit held for 3 months, you take the Arizona permit test (Permit Test @ Home) and hold the Arizona permit for 3 more months instead of 6.
Other things you can do online
A first Travel ID needs an office visit for your photo and documents. A name change does too.
- Renew your driver license, in most cases, up to six months before it expires
- Replace a lost, stolen or damaged license or ID card for $12
- Change your address for free. Arizona law says to report a move within 10 days
- Switch from a Class G to a regular license after you turn 18, by ordering a replacement
