ASWB Clinical exam: the exam for the LCSW and other clinical licenses

The Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Clinical exam is the exam for clinical social work licenses, such as the LCSW (licensed clinical social worker) in Texas, New York, California, Colorado, Maine and Utah. You take the ASWB Clinical exam after a master’s degree in social work (MSW) and two years of clinical experience, or what your board counts as equal. ASWB says clinical licensees can practice independently and can go into private practice.

What do you need for an LCSW, and where do you apply?

ASWB’s general answer has three parts: an MSW from an accredited program, supervised practice after the degree, and a pass on the Clinical exam. Each state fills in the details. In Texas, for example, the LCSW needs at least 3,000 hours of supervised clinical experience over at least 24 months, with at least 100 hours of supervision, plus a pass on the state’s jurisprudence exam.

Your LCSW application goes to your state board, not to ASWB, and the board decides when your experience is enough before it approves you for the exam. In Colorado, Maine, Texas and Utah, that first step is a preapproval that ASWB runs for the board. Texas lets you start exam registration when you’re within 6 months of finishing your two years. Some states add their own exam as well, such as California’s Law and Ethics Exam.

What does the ASWB Clinical exam cover?

The Clinical exam uses the same three content areas and the same 10 competency names as the Masters exam, but it gives values and ethics a slightly larger share. Some applied knowledge statements appear only in the Clinical outline:

  • Research ethics, such as institutional review boards and informed consent for human subjects
  • Methods of establishing program objectives and outcomes, and program evaluation
  • Quality assurance, such as program reviews and audits by outside bodies
  • Organizational development, structure and functioning

The rest of the outline covers ground you’d expect for clinical work, from risk assessment and the mental status examination to trauma-informed care and evidence-based practices such as cognitive behavioral therapy and motivational interviewing.

Clinical or Advanced Generalist?

Both need an MSW and two years of experience. The difference is the setting: Advanced Generalist is for nonclinical practice, which may include macro-level work, and Clinical is for clinical practice. ASWB says Advanced Generalist licensees can usually practice independently too. ASWB doesn’t sell an online practice test for Advanced Generalist, but it does for Clinical.

Practicing for the Clinical exam

ASWB’s Clinical online practice test is open to candidates once they’ve registered. Prep companies such as Pocket Prep, Agents of Change, Social Work Test Prep and the Therapist Development Center all sell Clinical products, and the study options page compares them. ASWB’s first-time pass rate for the Clinical exam is on the passing score page.
