What you get with ASWB’s online practice test
You get one attempt at a full-length test with a four-hour timer, and ASWB’s Guidebook says you can check in and out of it during your 30 days. Afterward you can review every question in a content area, or only the ones you got wrong, with the answers and ASWB’s rationales. Your access ends after 30 days or when ASWB receives your real exam scores, whichever comes first.
There’s one version for each exam category, so buying it again gets you the same questions. If you’re registered for the Associate exam, you can buy the Bachelors practice test, which shares its content outline, but it’s scored with the Bachelors passing score. ASWB also says its practice test’s format doesn’t exactly match the real exam at Pearson.
To buy it you need the Authorization to Test number from your ASWB email, and you sign in to it separately from ASWBCentral. If you’re approved for extra time on the real exam, you can take ASWB’s practice test with standard time, time and a half or double time.
Is there a free ASWB practice exam?
Not from ASWB, whose practice test is paid. What ASWB does publish openly is its Examination Guidebook, a PDF with sample questions for every category, each with the correct answer and an explanation. When you register, your Authorization to Test email also invites you to FifthTheory’s Test Mastery Inclusion program, which ASWB offers at no cost. It works on your test-taking mindset rather than exam content.
If you’re a student or working under supervision, ask your educator or supervisor. ASWB gives them a free guide that comes with group review practice questions, each one retired from a real exam, with a rationale for the answer.
Prep companies have small free samples too. Pocket Prep lets you try 60 questions free, Agents of Change offers 10 free practice questions and Social Work Test Prep has a free 10-question practice exam.
Steer clear of anyone offering real or remembered exam questions. You agree to a Confidentiality Statement when you take the exam, and ASWB has taken legal action against people who break exam security.
Which ASWB prep course fits you?
- Studying in short bursts on your phone? Pocket Prep is a question bank app for the Clinical and Masters exams.
- Want teaching and a place to ask questions? Agents of Change pairs recorded lessons with live study groups.
- Taking the Advanced Generalist exam? ASWB has no practice test for it, and Social Work Test Prep sells full-length practice exams for it as well as the other categories.
- Taking the Bachelors exam? Agents of Change and Social Work Test Prep list Bachelors products; the Pocket Prep and TDC pages cover only Clinical and Masters.
- Want a long, structured program with a coach? The Therapist Development Center (TDC) has study systems for the Clinical and Masters exams.
Agents of Change, Social Work Test Prep and TDC each say their material is updated for the 2026 exam, and Pocket Prep’s page describes the August 2026 format. ASWB doesn’t review or endorse any of them, and its Guidebook warns that some prep questions bear little resemblance to real ones.
A study path for the ASWB exam
- Download ASWB’s Examination Guidebook and find the content outline for your exam category.
- Rate how well you know each applied knowledge statement, using the study plan template in the Guidebook, and start with the ones you know least.
- Review those areas with one or two of the references the Guidebook suggests, along with your class notes from your social work program.
- Once you’re registered, take ASWB’s online practice test near the end, under the four-hour timer, and study the rationales afterward.
- If you buy a prep course or book, check that it’s built on the 2026 outline, not the older four-area one.
