The @Home online test
If you take the written test online, the testing site charges a $5 testing fee and a $1.50 card processing fee, so $6.50 for every try, the first one included.
A retake also carries the $11.50 state retest fee, which you pay in the office or through myDMV. Third-party test sites may add their own fees.
Costs the DMV doesn't set
- Driver education: a 30-hour course is required at 15, and from January 1, 2027 for everyone 15 to 17. Approved schools set their own prices.
- Behind-the-wheel training: under 16 and a half you need 6 hours with an approved driving school, priced by the school.
- The road test: approved third-party testers give it, and each one sets its own fee. The DMV only sets the $15.40 retest fee.
