Colorado motorcycle permit and endorsement

In Colorado you add a motorcycle to your driver license as an endorsement. There are two routes: pass the motorcycle written test, buy a motorcycle instruction permit and then pass a riding skills test, or complete a Motorcycle Operator Safety Training (MOST) course and use its waiver card. Either way it ends with an appointment at a driver license office.

Route 1: written test, permit, then skills test

  1. Study the Motorcycle Operator's Handbook (DR 2336).
  2. Book a 'motorcycle permit written test' appointment at a driver license office and pass it.
  3. Buy the motorcycle instruction permit and practice.
  4. Pass the motorcycle skills test with an approved third-party tester. The DMV doesn't give it.
  5. Back at a driver license office, buy a new license with the endorsement.

Route 2: the MOST course

Finish a MOST course approved by the Colorado State Patrol, then bring your original license waiver card to a driver license office appointment and buy a new license with the endorsement. Out-of-state Motorcycle Safety Foundation cards aren't accepted, unless you earned one on a military base.

Under 18 and under 21

  • Under 18, you hold the motorcycle permit for 12 months before getting the endorsement, and an adult signs the DR 2460M Affidavit of Liability.
  • Under 16, you complete a State Patrol-approved safety course before the permit.
  • From January 1, 2027, everyone under 21 must complete that approved safety course before a motorcycle permit.

Endorsement types and fees

An 'M' endorsement covers two- and three-wheel motorcycles. A '3' covers three-wheel only.

As of October 2026 the REAL ID instruction permit fee of $20 includes motorcycles, and the endorsement adds $2 to the license fee. You can't add it by mail, online or by phone.

Practicing for the motorcycle written test

The test comes from the Motorcycle Operator's Handbook, which is free on the DMV's Driver Education page. The DMV doesn't post a motorcycle practice quiz, and the 20 questions on this site are for the car test. Some of the websites in our study guide have free motorcycle practice sections.
