Taking the Colorado permit test online

Yes, you can take Colorado's written permit test online. The DMV's @Home Driving Knowledge Test runs at coathometesting.com, gives you 60 minutes, and costs $6.50 a try as of October 2026. You need a computer with a webcam. Passing doesn't give you the permit by itself: you still book a DMV appointment to get it.

What you need

  • A desktop or laptop with a webcam. The test won't start until it takes your photo, and it takes more at random while you work.
  • A major web browser such as Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari.
  • If you're under 19, an adult over 19 to act as your proxy. Your results are emailed to them.
  • Speakers, if you'd like the questions read aloud. That works in English and Spanish.

How it works

  1. Read the Colorado Driver Handbook and try the DMV's practice quiz.
  2. Start the test from the DMV's @Home page and pay the $5 testing fee plus $1.50 card fee.
  3. Answer within 60 minutes. If you fail, you can try again, but no more than twice a day, and each retake also has an $11.50 state fee.
  4. Once you pass, book an appointment at a state driver license office and bring your pass certificate. DMV staff compare the test photos with you in person.

Renewing your Colorado license online

If you already have a license, renewing is a different thing, and often you can do it online on myDMV. Drivers 21 and older can usually renew online or by mail if nothing has changed but their address. A name change means an in-person appointment.

Under 21, your minor license expires 20 days after your 21st birthday. You can renew it from that birthday on. Upgrading from a permit to a license can also be done online in many cases.
