How it works

One multiple-choice test, 80% to pass, at home or at the DMV

  1. The written test, which the DMV calls the Driving Knowledge Test, is multiple choice and comes from the Colorado Driver Handbook.
  2. The DMV doesn't publish the number of questions on its permit pages. Its rules for the written test set the pass mark at 80%.
  3. You can take it at home online with the @Home test, which allows 60 minutes and needs a computer with a webcam. Under 19, an adult over 19 acts as your proxy.
  4. Or book a written test appointment at a state driver license office. Pass there and you can usually get your permit at the same visit.
  5. The test comes in English and Spanish. In the office it can be read aloud through headphones you bring, or interpreted.
  6. You can take it as many times as you need, but no more than twice in one day. Each retake has an $11.50 state fee.
  7. At the permit appointment you also have a vision screening, fingerprints and a photo.

What’s on the test

01

Permits and Colorado's teen driver rules

What you need at each age to get a Colorado permit, how long teens hold it, and the limits on a minor license in the first year.

Key points (4)
  • The earliest permit age is 15, and a 15-year-old needs a 30-hour driver education course first.
  • Your supervising driver must be 21 or older, licensed, and sitting in the front passenger seat.
  • Under 18, you hold the permit 12 months and log 50 hours, 10 of them at night, before the drive test.
  • For the first year on a minor license, no driving from midnight to 5 a.m. unless an exception applies.
02

Seat belts, child seats, phones and alcohol

The safety laws Colorado updated recently, from the 2025 phone ban to the child seat stages, and what alcohol means for a driver under 21.

Key points (4)
  • Every occupant must wear a seat belt, and a teen driver can be ticketed for unbelted passengers.
  • Children 4 to under 9 weighing at least 40 pounds ride in a booster or child seat, in the back if possible.
  • Since January 1, 2025, no driver may use a handheld phone except to contact police or fire in an emergency.
  • Under 21, an alcohol or marijuana violation costs your license even if you weren't driving.
03

Following distance, weather and lights

How much space to leave, and how to change it for rain, snow, fog and night driving.

Key points (4)
  • Stay at least three seconds behind the car ahead, and add a second on wet roads.
  • When you stop, you should be able to see where the tires of the car in front touch the road.
  • On wet roads, slow down and leave five or six seconds. Stopping on ice and snow can take up to 10 times as far.
  • Use low beams in fog. High beams reflect back and cut what you can see.
04

Turns, roundabouts and right-of-way

Which lane to turn from, who goes first in a roundabout, and how to handle intersections with no signs.

Key points (4)
  • Right turns go from the right lane into the first open lane. Left turns start and end next to the yellow line.
  • In a roundabout, cars yield to trucks, buses, RVs and emergency vehicles.
  • At an intersection with no signs or signals, slow down and check both ways twice.
  • Before changing lanes, signal and glance over your shoulder at the blind spot.
05

Mountain, rural and wildlife driving

Colorado driving brings steep grades, gravel, altitude and animals on the road. Here's what the DMV expects you to know.

Key points (4)
  • Use a lower gear on long, steep hills, and never coast downhill in neutral.
  • On a narrow road, the driver going downhill yields to the one going uphill.
  • If you drift onto a gravel shoulder, keep straight, ease off the gas and steer back when it's clear.
  • Don't swerve for an animal you can't stop for. Deer crashes peak in October and November.
06

Sharing the road

Colorado's recent laws for stopped vehicles, snowplows, horses and motorcycles, and how to give each of them room.

Key points (4)
  • Move over a lane for any stopped vehicle with hazards on, or slow to 20 mph below the limit.
  • Passing a tandem line of snowplows with lights on is a Class A traffic offense.
  • Pass a horse wide and slow, at least 6 feet away when you can, and don't honk.
  • A motorcycle may filter between stopped cars at up to 15 mph when traffic next to it is also stopped.
07

Pavement markings and railroad crossings

What the lines on the road tell you, and how to cross railroad tracks safely when there are no lights or gates.

Key points (3)
  • Yellow lines separate traffic going opposite ways. Two solid yellow lines mean no passing either way.
  • Many rural crossings have only a yellow warning sign and a white X-shaped crossbuck.
  • At any crossing, slow down, look both ways and listen, and never stop on the tracks.

20 practice questions on Colorado's own rules

Here are 20 questions written from the Colorado Driver Handbook and the DMV's parent guide, at the real test's 80% bar, so 16 right is a pass. The DMV doesn't say how many questions the real test has, so treat this as a warm-up rather than a full mock. Several are about things only Colorado asks: mountain roads, snowplows, the 2025 phone ban and passing horses. After each answer, the tutor can explain it another way or tell you why the other choices are wrong.

Question 1 of 20

What is the youngest age you can get a Colorado instruction permit?

Sample of the written test: same format, 20 questions.

Test day

What to bring to your Colorado DMV permit appointment

  • Proof of identity and lawful presence, such as a U.S. passport or a certified birth certificate with a second ID. A school ID alone isn't enough
  • Proof of your Colorado address: one for a Standard permit, two for REAL ID. Under 21, a parent's address documents can count
  • Your Social Security number. You can just say it
  • Under 18: a parent, guardian or responsible adult to sign the DR 2460 Affidavit of Liability in front of DMV staff
  • Your driver education certificate if you're 15 to 16, and your @Home pass certificate if you tested online
  • Your glasses or contacts, for the vision screening

Before you go

  1. Read the Colorado Driver Handbook. It's free from the DMV in English and Spanish, and there's an audio version too.
  2. Try the DMV's own Driver Handbook Practice Quiz to see the question style.
  3. Fill in the DMV's online pre-registration before your first visit. You still need an appointment.
  4. Under 16? Finish your driver education course first. From January 1, 2027, everyone 15 to 17 needs the 30-hour course.
  5. Decide whether to take the test at home with @Home or in the office, and book your appointment.
  6. Check your documents against the DMV's list. Forgetting documents is the top reason appointments fail.

FAQ

Common questions

How many questions are on the Colorado permit test, and what's the passing score?

The Colorado DMV doesn't list the number of questions on its permit pages, as of October 2026. Its testing rules set the pass mark at 80%. Every question is multiple choice and comes from the Colorado Driver Handbook, so reading the handbook is the best way to prepare.

Can I take the Colorado DMV written test online?

Yes. The @Home Driving Knowledge Test runs online and gives you 60 minutes. You need a desktop or laptop with a webcam, and if you're under 19 an adult over 19 acts as your proxy. The first try costs $6.50 in testing and card fees, as of October 2026. Passing online doesn't give you the permit. You still book an appointment at a state driver license office and bring your pass certificate.

How old do you have to be to get an instruction permit in Colorado?

You can get a learner's permit at 15. From 15 to 15 and a half you need a 30-hour driver education course first. From 15 and a half to 16, the 4-hour driver awareness program also works. From 16 on, no course is needed today, but that changes on January 1, 2027 (see below).

How much is the permit test in Colorado?

As of October 2026 the permit itself costs $20 for a REAL ID permit or $23 for a Standard one. The DMV fee list doesn't show a separate charge for your first written test in the office. If you fail, each retake has an $11.50 state fee. The online @Home test adds $6.50 per try for testing and card fees.

What happens if I fail the Colorado DMV written test?

You can take it again as many times as you need, but no more than twice in one day. Each retake carries an $11.50 state fee, as of October 2026. Use the time between tries to reread the handbook sections you got wrong.

Is the written driving test the same as the Colorado driving test?

No. The written test is the knowledge test you pass for your permit. The driving test, or drive test, comes later, once you've held your permit long enough. In Colorado, state driver license offices don't give drive tests. You book them with an approved third-party driving school or testing location.

Where can I take the driver's license test in Colorado Springs?

For the written test, Colorado Springs has a State Driver License Office, plus El Paso County offices at Garden of the Gods, Southeast and Union Town Center. Union Town Center also opens on Saturday mornings. Book through the DMV's appointment system. The drive test is done by approved third-party testers, not at these offices.

Are there free Colorado permit practice test questions and answers?

Yes. The DMV has a free Driver Handbook Practice Quiz on its Driver Education page, and the 20 questions on this page are free with an explanation for every answer. There's no official answer key to the real test. The questions come from the handbook, so that's where to learn the answers.

Can I take the Colorado permit test in Spanish?

Yes. The written test is offered in English and Spanish, in the office and online, and the handbook comes in Spanish as the Manual del Conductor. No other languages are offered, but you can bring your own translator to interpret in the office.

What changes for new drivers under 21 in 2027?

From January 1, 2027, everyone 15 to 17 needs a 30-hour driver education course before getting a permit. Drivers 18 to 20 need either the 30-hour course or a 4-hour in-person driver awareness program. Under 21, you'll also need an approved motorcycle safety course before a motorcycle permit. If you already have your permit before then, the new rules don't apply to you.

All 20 practice questions with answersA printable list of the practice test above
  1. What is the youngest age you can get a Colorado instruction permit?

15 Colorado issues a learner's permit from age 15. At 15 you also need to finish a 30-hour driver education course first, and you still have to pass the written test.

  2. If you're under 18, how long must you hold your permit before you can take the driving test?

12 months Under-18 permit holders must hold the permit for at least 12 full months from the date it was issued. Adults 18 and older have no minimum holding time.

  3. How many hours of supervised driving must an under-18 driver log before getting a license?

50 hours, including 10 at night Colorado asks for at least 50 hours of supervised driving, and 10 of those hours must be at night. A parent, guardian or responsible adult signs the log, which you hand in or upload when you upgrade.

  4. During their first year with a minor license, when may a teen NOT drive (unless an exception applies)?

From midnight to 5 a.m. For the first year, a minor license holder can't drive between midnight and 5 a.m. Exceptions include driving with a parent or guardian, going to or from school or work with a signed statement, a medical emergency, or being an emancipated minor.

  5. A 6-year-old who weighs 45 pounds is riding in your car. Under Colorado law, how must the child ride?

In a booster seat or child restraint, in the back seat if there is one Children from 4 to under 9 years old who weigh at least 40 pounds must be in a child restraint system or booster seat, in the rear seat if one is available. If the parent isn't in the car, it's the driver's job to make sure.

  6. Since January 1, 2025, when may a Colorado driver hold and talk on a phone while driving?

Only when calling police or the fire department in an emergency Colorado now bans all drivers from using a handheld mobile device while driving. The only exceptions are contacting law enforcement or the fire department in an emergency, or using a hands-free accessory.

  7. A 19-year-old is caught with alcohol at a party. They weren't driving. What can happen to their license?

They can lose it In Colorado, an alcohol or marijuana violation by anyone under 21 leads to loss of their driver's license, even when they weren't behind the wheel. For minors, driving with even a trace of alcohol is also punishable.

  8. How do you check that you're at least three seconds behind the car ahead?

Count from when the other car's rear bumper passes a fixed object until your front bumper reaches it Pick a fixed object such as a sign or pole. Start counting when the rear bumper of the car ahead passes it. If your front bumper reaches it before you get to 'one thousand three', you're too close.

  9. The road is wet from rain. What following distance does the DMV's guide suggest?

Five or six seconds On wet or slippery roads it takes longer to stop, so the guide says to slow down and stretch your following distance to five or six seconds. Turn on your wipers and low beams too.

  10. You're driving in thick fog. Which lights should you use?

Low beams, and fog lights if you have them Use low beams, plus fog lights if your car has them. High beams bounce off the fog and make it harder to see. Slow down until your speed matches how far ahead you can see.

  11. You're in a car entering a roundabout at the same time as a large truck. Who must yield?

You must yield to the truck A 2023 Colorado law says drivers must yield to trucks, buses, emergency vehicles, RVs and other large vehicles entering, leaving or driving in a roundabout. Large vehicles often need more than one lane to get around.

  12. On a road with several lanes, which lane should a left turn usually start and end in?

The lane closest to the right of the yellow center line Left turns should almost always begin and end in the lane closest to the right of the yellow line. Steer through the middle of that lane so you don't cut into other lanes.

  13. You're driving downhill on a narrow mountain road and meet a car coming uphill. There's only room for one. Who must yield?

You, the driver going downhill On a narrow road, the driver going downhill must yield to the vehicle going uphill. It's easier for the downhill driver to back up or pull over safely.

  14. What's the safe way to control your speed going down a long, steep hill?

Use a lower gear Use a lower gear to help hold your speed on long, steep hills, going up or down. Never coast downhill in neutral or with the clutch pushed in, because you lose the engine's help in slowing the car.

  15. A deer steps onto the road and you can't stop in time. What does the DMV say to do?

Brake and stay in your lane rather than swerve If you can't stop for an animal, don't swerve. Swerving makes the car hard to control, and the worst crashes happen when drivers swerve into oncoming traffic or roll into a ditch.

  16. A car is stopped on the highway shoulder with its hazard lights flashing. You can't safely change lanes. What does Colorado's Move Over Law require?

Slow down to at least 20 mph below the speed limit When you pass any stationary vehicle with hazards flashing, move over one lane if it's safe. If you can't, or the road has only one lane each way, slow to at least 20 mph below the posted limit.

  17. Several CDOT snowplows are clearing the highway side by side in a line, lights flashing. What should you do?

Stay back and don't pass Passing snowplows working together in a tandem line with their lights on is a Class A traffic offense in Colorado. Give them room, don't tailgate, and watch for sudden stops and turns.

  18. You need to pass a person riding a horse beside the road. What does the 2025 Colorado law say?

Pass wide and slow, keeping 6 feet away if you can Since August 2025, drivers passing an equestrian must pass wide and slow, keep 6 feet away (or as much space as traffic allows), not use the horn unless needed to avoid danger, and obey a rider's signal to stop or slow.

  19. What do two solid yellow lines in the center of the road mean?

No passing in either direction Two solid yellow center lines mark a no-passing zone for traffic in both directions. Stay on your side of the road.

  20. On a rural road you reach a railroad crossing marked only with a white X-shaped sign. No lights, no gates. What should you do?

Slow down, look both ways and listen, and cross only if no train is coming Many rural crossings have only a yellow advance warning sign and a white crossbuck, with no lights, bells or gates. Slow down, look both ways, listen and be ready to stop. Cross only when you can't see or hear a train either way.
