Booking a Colorado DMV appointment

Book Colorado DMV appointments on the state's scheduling site: choose a state driver license office, pick the written test or permit service, then a date and time. First-timers should fill in the online pre-registration too. Walk-in space is limited. Drive tests and vehicle registration aren't booked here: drive tests go through approved schools, and registration goes through your county.

How to book

  1. Do the DMV's online pre-registration if it's your first Colorado license or permit. You'll get a confirmation email and PDF.
  2. Open the DMV's appointment scheduler and choose a state DMV location.
  3. Choose your service, for example the written test or a first-time permit appointment. The motorcycle written test and the CDL written test have their own options.
  4. Pick a date and time. The first open date is highlighted.
  5. Confirm with the code sent to your email or phone. Keep the email: it has a barcode you show at check-in.

Boulder, Colorado Springs and other offices

Every state driver license office books through the same scheduler, including Boulder and the Colorado Springs State Driver License Office. El Paso County's offices in Colorado Springs (Garden of the Gods, Southeast and Union Town Center) also handle new licenses and permit upgrades. Douglas County's offices in Castle Rock, Highlands Ranch and Lone Tree require appointments.

There's no single wait time to quote. The scheduler shows the first open date for the office you pick, so if one city is booked out, try a nearby office.

Canceling or changing

Cancel on the scheduler's cancellation page with your appointment ID and the phone number you booked with. If you've lost the ID, call 720-295-2965. Need an accommodation such as an ASL interpreter? Ask at least seven days ahead.

What this scheduler doesn't book

  • Drive tests: state offices don't give them. Book with an approved third-party driving school or testing location.
  • Vehicle registration and titles: these are county services. Most counties run their own appointments, and a county office only serves its own residents.
  • A few vehicle services are available by appointment at the state's Westgate office in Lakewood.
