Delaware CDL tests and how to practice

The Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) doesn’t post a commercial driver’s license (CDL) practice test, so any Delaware CDL practice test you find comes from another company; the study options page compares them. The DMV’s online Sample Driving Exam covers car knowledge and signs only. Your official study material is the Delaware CDL Manual, the modernized version released in 2025, and a Spanish CDL manual is posted too. The knowledge tests themselves are walk-in at any DMV office.

Which Delaware CDL tests do you take?

Everyone takes the General Knowledge test. Your license class and endorsements may add more. The classes are:

  • Class A: a combination over 26,000 pounds, towing more than 10,000 pounds
  • Class B: a single vehicle over 26,000 pounds, towing no more than 10,000 pounds
  • Class C: a smaller vehicle designed for 16 or more people, including the driver, or one placarded for hazardous materials

The endorsements are H (hazardous materials), N (tank vehicle), P (passenger), T (doubles and triples), X (tank and hazmat) and S (school bus). If you’re applying for H, you finish entry-level driver training (ELDT) before that knowledge test.

Is there a Delaware CDL practice test?

Not from the DMV. Its Sample Driving Exam has only car tests, so the CDL Manual is the official place to study. Read the general knowledge part first, then the parts for your class and endorsements.

Other companies’ sites and apps offer CDL practice, and their questions are their own.

Getting your commercial learner’s permit

Under Delaware law (21 Del. C. §2608), a commercial learner’s permit (CLP) needs a valid Delaware driver’s license and passing the vision and written tests for a CDL. Once you have it:

  • You drive a commercial vehicle only with a CDL holder licensed for that vehicle sitting beside you
  • You may not carry hazardous materials
  • You can add a passenger, school bus or tank endorsement by passing its written test before the permit is issued, but you can’t carry passengers or students, and a tank vehicle must be empty
  • You get one renewal at most, within a year of the original permit

Steps to a Delaware CDL

  1. Check which class you need with the DMV’s CDL chart.
  2. Walk in to any DMV office to take the vision and knowledge tests for your commercial learner’s permit.
  3. For a first Class A or B license, an upgrade, or a first P, S or H endorsement, complete ELDT with a provider listed on the federal Training Provider Registry.
  4. Book the skills test online with My Road Test or by phone, once you’ve held the permit long enough. Skills tests are by appointment, every weekday except Wednesday.
  5. Take the skills test in a vehicle of your class, with the same paperwork as any road test: your permit, a licensed driver at least 21, and the registration and insurance cards.

The DMV began a modernized CDL skills test at all locations on February 26, 2025. Wilmington’s test pad can’t take vehicles over 67 feet, so book another office for those. Under Delaware regulation 2226, private organizations approved by the DMV may also give CDL skills tests.

Delaware CDL fees

ItemFee
CDL (8 years)$55
CDL with hazmat (5 years)$30
Each added endorsement$10
Class change needing a test$10
Commercial learner’s permit$10

Delaware law (21 Del. C. §2611) sets the license, endorsement and class change fees, and §2608 and the July 2026 manual give $10 for the permit. The DMV’s CDL web page says $5, so bring enough for either. Entry-level training is paid to the training provider, which sets its own price.
