The Delaware road test (driving test)

The Delaware road test is a drive of about 30 minutes with a Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) examiner, in a car you bring. You book it yourself, online with My Road Test or by calling a DMV office, once you’ve waited long enough after the knowledge test. The Delaware driving test checks ordinary driving, such as turns, lane changes and parallel parking, and the DMV says no tricks will be played on you.

When can you take the Delaware road test?

Two DMV sources give different answers. The Delaware Driver Manual dated July 2026 says you can take a Class D road test 30 days after you pass the knowledge test. The DMV’s road test web page and its Apply for License page say 10 days. Ask your DMV office which one applies before you book.

For motorcycles, both sources say 10 days after the motorcycle knowledge test. Under 18 in driver education, your driver ed teacher gives your road test, so this page applies to you only if the DMV tests you.

How to book a Delaware DMV road test appointment

You can book in either of these ways:

Have your license or permit number ready. Check in when you arrive and be ready at your time: if you’re late, you’ll have to rebook. If you need a reasonable modification for a skills test, email DMVCustomerService@delaware.gov or call 302-744-2500 before your visit.

What to bring to the road test

You need all of these with you:

  • Your valid learner’s permit
  • A licensed driver at least 21 years old, with their valid license (not needed for a motorcycle test)
  • The valid registration card for the car, and the trailer if there is one
  • A valid insurance card for the car, original or electronic

The licensed driver must stay on site, so someone can drive the car away if you don’t pass.

The car you test in

You provide the car, and it must be in the license class you’re testing for, with every safety feature working. The examiner does a basic safety inspection before you start. Also make sure of these:

  • At least half a tank of gas, or the test may be rescheduled
  • No debris or cargo inside
  • Intelligent parking assist turned off or disabled
  • No smoking, phone use or music during the test

Road tests may be canceled for bad weather, such as rain, snow, sleet, hail, fog or wind.

What the examiner checks

You’ll drive normally and show that you can:

  • Respond to road signs, traffic signals and pavement markings
  • Parallel park
  • Make a three-point turn
  • Make right and left turns
  • Change lanes and merge with traffic
  • Use the right-of-way rules and keep a proper speed
  • Back up 50 feet
  • Follow and overtake vehicles, and be overtaken
  • Enter intersections
  • Inspect the vehicle for safety and know its controls

If you don’t pass

Prepare well and book it again later. The July 2026 manual says to wait at least 30 days before you retest; the DMV’s road test page says at least 10 days. If you don’t pass within the 12 months your permit lasts, you reapply for the permit and take all the tests again.
