Free EPA 608 practice test: Core and all three types

Here are 20 free questions in the style of the Section 608 technician test. The real test has 25 questions in each section, Core, Type I, Type II and Type III, and a closed-book test needs 70% on each, so aim for 14 out of 20 here. This free EPA 608 practice test is our own, written from EPA’s Section 608 Test Topics and the rules in 40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F. You’ll see why each answer is right, and the tutor can explain it another way.

Question 1 of 20

Which of these refrigerants is a hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC)?

Where else can you find a free EPA 608 practice test?

EPA doesn’t publish a practice test, but it posts the topics each section covers, and every question here comes from that list. Among the approved programs, Mainstream Engineering gives away Type I training software with unlimited practice exams for Windows. For Type II, Type III and Universal, the programs’ practice material is paid or comes as a trial.

The real test is closed-book for Type II, Type III and Universal, so practice without notes.

How our 20 questions are split

Universal is 100 questions, 25 from each section. Ours keep close to that balance.

SectionReal testOur 20
Core256
Type I, small appliances255
Type II, high-pressure255
Type III, low-pressure254

Each section is scored on its own, so a weak Type III score can’t be saved by a strong Core.
