What does the FAA drone license cost?
These are the costs on the Part 107 route, and who charges each one:
- The Unmanned Aircraft General-Small (UAG) knowledge test: paid to PSI Services when you book. The FAA’s operations over people page says a fee is required, and PSI sells FAA test vouchers at $175 plus applicable tax. PSI’s public pages list only the voucher price, so check the amount on PSI’s FAA site before you pay.
- The certificate application, FAA Form 8710‑13 in the Integrated Airman Certification and Rating Application (IACRA): the FAA’s Become a Drone Pilot steps list no fee for it.
- Drone registration on FAADroneZone: $5 per drone under Part 107, valid for three years.
- Recurrent training every 24 calendar months: no cost, online.
- Study material: the FAA’s study guide and standards are free PDFs; paid courses set their own prices.
Test vouchers from schools and employers
Schools, employers and other organizations can buy FAA test vouchers from PSI for the people they sponsor, at $175 each plus applicable tax. PSI says a voucher is valid for one year from the date it’s issued and can’t be extended past that. If your employer or course provider uses them, ask before you pay for the test yourself.
Routes that cost less
If you already hold a Part 61 pilot certificate, you may be able to skip the paid test: the FAA’s initial course ALC-451 on FAASafety.gov has no cost and meets the knowledge requirement for pilots who qualify.
Failing costs you a second test fee, because you book and pay again after the 14-day wait. The FAA’s sample questions in its testing advisory cost nothing to try before you book.
Flying only for fun costs less again
Recreational flyers don’t take the UAG test. They take The Recreational UAS Safety Test (TRUST), the FAA’s test for people who fly unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) for fun, which every FAA-approved test administrator offers free, and their registration costs $5 for three years and covers all the drones they own.
