The FAA Part 107 test study guide and the other free FAA PDFs

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) lists three free documents as suggested study material for the Part 107 knowledge test: the Remote Pilot Airman Certification Standards (ACS), the Remote Pilot Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems Study Guide (FAA-G-8082‑22) and the Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge. The FAA Part 107 test study guide is dated August 2016, before the 2021 changes that added night flying, operations over people and Remote ID to the rules. So read it alongside the ACS, FAA-S-ACS-10B, which took effect on April 6, 2021 and covers those topics.

What’s in the FAA Part 107 test study guide?

The FAA wrote the guide to set out the knowledge areas you study for the remote pilot test. Its 12 chapters are:

  • Applicable regulations
  • Airspace classification, operating requirements and flight restrictions
  • Aviation weather sources, and the effects of weather on small unmanned aircraft performance
  • Small unmanned aircraft loading
  • Emergency procedures
  • Crew resource management
  • Radio communication procedures
  • Determining the performance of small unmanned aircraft
  • Physiological factors, including drugs and alcohol
  • Aeronautical decision-making and judgment
  • Airport operations
  • Maintenance and preflight inspection procedures

There’s no chapter on night operations. Night flying became a knowledge area of the test with the 2021 rule changes, so take that topic from the ACS and Advisory Circular (AC) 107‑2A instead.

The Remote Pilot ACS: what the test can ask

The ACS is the FAA’s standard for the test. It splits the knowledge into five areas, regulations, airspace, weather, loading and performance, and operations, and gives every element a code such as UA.I.B.K21, operating limitations. Those codes are what your test report prints for the questions you miss, so the ACS is also how you read your result.

Its first appendix gives the test’s length and how the questions are shared across the five areas. The knowledge test page has those figures.

The testing supplement and sectional charts

The chart questions on the test refer to a figure book, the Airman Knowledge Testing Supplement for Sport Pilot, Recreational Pilot, Remote Pilot, and Private Pilot (FAA-CT-8080‑2H). The proctor gives you a copy at the test center, and the FAA publishes the same supplement as a PDF.

From October 26, 2026, some Unmanned Aircraft General-Small (UAG) questions also use sectional-chart images that aren’t in the supplement; the knowledge test page explains the change. The FAA’s advisory says no date has been set to remove printed supplements from test centers.

Other FAA references worth having

AC 107‑2A, Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems, dated February 1, 2021, is the FAA’s guidance on Part 107 and covers the rule changes the study guide predates. The FAA also publishes a short summary of the rule as a PDF, and the Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge goes deeper on weather, charts and decision-making.
