How long is the ISEE test? Times and sections by level

It depends on the level. Testing time for the Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE) runs from 53 minutes for Primary 2 to 2 hours 40 minutes for the Middle and Upper Levels, with breaks on top. How long the ISEE test takes doesn’t change with the format: E3n says online and paper tests have the same number of questions and the same timing. The level goes by the grade your child is applying to.

  • 53 to 60 minutesPrimary 2, 3 and 4, plus one break
  • 2 hours 20 minutesLower Level, plus two breaks
  • 2 hours 40 minutesMiddle and Upper Levels, plus two breaks

Primary Levels have Reading and Mathematics only, with no essay and one break of up to 10 minutes. In Auditory Comprehension, children listen to a passage without seeing it, then hear the questions while reading them on screen. The ISEE Quick Facts Guide counts these listening questions inside Reading, as 24 questions in 27 minutes.

Breaks and arrival times

  • Lower, Middle and Upper Levels have two 10-minute breaks: one after Quantitative Reasoning and one after Mathematics Achievement.
  • At an in-person test, arrive by the check-in time on your Verification Letter.
  • At home, start the check-in 30 minutes before the scheduled start time.
  • At a Prometric center, a student who arrives 30 minutes or more late can’t test and gets no refund.

ISEE test format: online or paper

  • Online: questions and answers are on a device, the essay is typed and the test site gives out scratch paper and pencils.
  • Paper, Lower to Upper Level: questions are in a booklet, answers are bubbled on a separate answer document with a #2 or HB pencil, and the essay is handwritten in black or blue ballpoint pen.
  • Paper, Primary Levels: children mark their answers in the test booklet itself.
  • Either way, students can change answers within the section they’re working on.
