ISEE vs SSAT: how the two tests compare

E3n runs both tests and says it has no preference. In its words, the Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE) and the Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT) are remarkably similar in what they assess, in difficulty and length at each grade, and in how well they predict first-year success. So the ISEE vs SSAT choice comes down to what each school accepts, then test format, dates and how often your child might test.

Which is easier, the SSAT or the ISEE?

E3n doesn’t call either one easier, and it describes their difficulty as similar. Schools compare each test’s scores with that test’s own past results, so an ISEE score and an SSAT score aren’t on the same scale.

Scoring is where they differ. At the SSAT’s Middle and Upper Levels, a wrong answer takes off a quarter point, so guessing needs some thought. The ISEE takes nothing off for a wrong answer, so a guess is never worse than a blank.

E3n says ISEE at Home generally runs daily, while SSAT at Home runs one to two weeks a month. Both tests are offered at Prometric centers.

ISEE or SSAT: which should your child take?

E3n lists these factors in order of priority:

  1. School requirements. Check what each school asks for. E3n says in some regions only one test is offered, especially at local day schools.
  2. Test format. Think about whether your child would rather test on paper or on a computer, and handwrite or type the essay.
  3. Dates and distance. Look at the nearest test site and whether its dates fit, plus whether your child may want to test more than once.
  4. The Character Skills Snapshot and the Standard Application Online (SAO). If a school wants the Snapshot, SSAT registration offers a bundle in the same account, and SSAT and Snapshot results link to SAO applications.
  5. Score timing. E3n says ISEE paper scores typically come within 5 to 10 days and computer results within 3 to 5 days, while SSAT paper scores typically come within two weeks.

E3n says most schools are understanding when scores arrive just after a deadline because the test fell close to it. Ask each school before you register.

The ISEE number is the grade being applied to; the SSAT number is the grade the student is in. E3n adds that in spring, SSAT students may test up a grade, for example a 7th grader taking the 8th grade test, and those scores can go with fall applications.
